Noob User - LEDs are jumpin' but no sound

Hi
I have Sonar 8 studio on Windows 8 laptop.
This is the first time I tried to use a DAW. I don't have a USB piano/controller.
When I opened up, I got a popup message: Audio Driver Error. The reason, it said, was with the Realtek HD Audio Output (wave RT).
I tried the troubleshooting recommended by the tutorial, but this Realtek soundcard was not in the hardware list, so I could do nothing more than click the "Use Anyway" button. So if the problem lies with the soundcard, then we are all done, because I only have that one default soundcard.

But, I loaded up a file from the tutorial folder to see what might happen, and I pressed play - nothing else. So I haven't messed anything up yet. All the meters are jumpin' but I just have no sound. So it seems to me a simple fix - either my sound card is just no good (the driver is up to date) or I just need to push a button (or two) to route the signal somewhere.
I tried a couple of youtube tutorials before I posted here, but they didn't seem to help. Can you try please?
Thank You
Phil

    Hi
Thank you very much for your fast reply.
I went to the link and followed the instructions. I went to the Toshiba website and downloaded a Realtek driver from September and installed it. My soundcard seems ok - Youtube is playing fine, but I still have nothing from Sonar.
I just reopened Sonar and I got a popup saying I have no MIDI outs configured. I just clicked Continue with no MIDI outs. Not sure if that was correct or not.
    Thank you

I suspect so. You will probably want to use TTS-1 or another soft synth to render MIDI to audio even if SONAR could find the MS Wavetable synth as a MIDI output device. Refer to your SONAR documentation tutorial #4 for playing MIDI data.

    Hi
Thank you - I'll take a look at the tutorial
I forgot to mention this - may mean something. On the Audio options dialog box, the only option for Record Timing Master is the microphone. Same thing on the Drivers tab.
Also, on the Advanced tab the box for Use MMCSS (Windows Vista) box is checked. I'm not using Vista.

Sonar is not seeing your soundcard.  You might try using a WDM or MME driver mode.

Thank you - I installed the TTS-1 and now I have sound.
I have a bunch of FX in a folder C\Program Files\cakewalk\shared plugins, but if I try to put an effect on an instrument track by right-clicking in the box, I can only see MIDI fx. Can you help with that please?
    Thanks
