Noob here

Hello everyone,

I am a noob to using DAWs I own Sonar 8.5, and Sonar Steam edition (professional) 2017. and the new free bandilabs cakewalk.
I found me a Casio CTK-496 in the dumpster. I bought a 5.00 power adapter and everything seems to work.  I wanted to use it with the above DAWs I mentioned can someone tell me what I need to purchase to be able to connect it by the 5 pin MIDI ports also I have an onboard (MOBO) sound card. I don't have much money to set this up but I would like to be able to make my own game music and sound effects.

I know the onboard sound is not ideal so any suggestion on that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

A usb soundcard with a midi connection would be a good start.

The Steinberg UR-22 is a good, simple USB audio interface that will suit you just fine. It is very affordable (about 100.00).

If you're happy with your on-board sound card to get started with, you can use the soft synths (VSTi's) that come with Sonar / Cakewalk.

All you really need is a cable to connect your Casio keyboard to your PC.

Something like this will suffice:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-IN-OUT-MIDI-Interface-Cable-Converter-PC-to-Music-Keyboard-Adapter-Cord-New/173393342686?epid=17021157191&hash=item285f0c70de:rk:1:pf:0

If you're going to do any sort of audio recording (like vocals), then go with something like Kamikaze/Michael's suggestions.

Don't know if you need it, but here's the user manual for that keyboard. I took a look at it, and I see your dilemma: no MIDI-over-USB, just 5-pin DIN. The easiest solution would be an inexpensive USB MIDI interface. Roland makes one that goes for 40 bucks. That should be all you need to get started. Don't worry about the onboard sound card, it won't be a problem for what you want to do.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Notifications haven't been working on this forum for a while.

We're all* looking forward to Bandlab getting a new forum up and running at some point.

Welcome! It's good to see a fellow frugal recordist.

Unfortunately, I've tried one of the $5 eBay USB-to-MIDI cables such as Mark linked to, and it's prone to stuck notes.

The M-Audio UNO is about the least costly I can think of: https://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-UNO/dp/B00007JRBM/

If you think you might ever want to record audio, you could get one of Behringer's interfaces that will allow you to do MIDI as well as audio for not much more. Their quality has been getting better and better.

You can get surprisingly decent audio playback with the on-board Realtek HD chip, either using ASIO4ALL or WASAPI.

Cool that you rescued the Casio from the dumpster. She may repay you for that kindness. Rescue instruments can be like rescue dogs in that way. I loved my Casio, it had a fast, springy velocity-sensitive keybed and some cool built-in rhythms, like the "Blue Monday" 16 Beat. There are some good sounds that come with CbB and tons of freeware and inexpensive softsynths out there.
