Nostromo n52 profile for Project 5

Was wishing for a small little transport controller this weekend, when my eyes fell upon my Belkin Nostromo n52 game pad (it's a little left handed keyboard for gamers).

At any rate, I have started on a profile, it does some basic stuff at this point, but I'll keep working on it.

Two questions:

Anyone else using one of these and already have an awesome profile that they would like to share?
Anyone else using one of these and interested in the profile that I am creating?

And one more question: Is there a keyboard shortcut to arm a track for recording?

    Hi Andy,

Sounds like a fun little project you have going there. I've still got my eyes on the forthcoming TranzPort though.

    Bets of luck!

I knew there was another gamer in here!

I'm still working on my profile as well. With project5, SoundForge and Pinnacle Studio, I have a similar transport control scheme for each program. Play, stop, home, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, next clip, prev.clip and then some program-specific macros. This supposed "game" controller works really well for editing programs. In P5, I keep coming up with something else to automate so it's still a work in progress for now.

I CANNOT find a shortcut key to arm a track! What's up Cakewalk? Why....? Everything else is a simple button press away except that I have to grab the mouse and aim for that little red dot. Oh well. At least it's bigger than the dot in Version 1.5

I have added a Wiki Page for the first pass at the configuration.

The page has a link to the file. If anyone knows the wiki magic to actually put the file into the wiki, I'd greatly appreciate it if you would do so (or let me know and I'll do it).

Nice contribution, Andy. I placed a new post with Mike West's name in it hoping that as the "keeper o' da wiki" he could give you some help on uploading the config file into the Wiki database and linking "internally" to it. Let's see what he says.

Thanks for the kind words, I was just hoping to not crash anything. BTW - I just checked, and the file is on the Wiki now.

Hmmm...I should forward this to Belkin and see if I can get a commission. :)

Cool. It is up there already...That Mike West...he's a quick study...I saw he said he was working on encryption code in C...I'll bet he needed a break.

Yeah, I needed a brain break, not to mention a subway roasted chicken sandwich. I'll have to change some code to get the uploads different; the .n52 extension isn't recognized.

Haven't decided that's worth it yet. Tell me, how are these profiles stored for use in p5? Is the .n52 arbitrary, or does it have some meaning? (My first assumption is that it's named for the device, but whether that has meaning ...?). Maybe we can agree on an extension such as ".controller.profile" that I can add in and be reasonably sure we're not infecting ourselves with a nasty virus or other illicit piece of software ... .controller.profile files with come with instructions - drop the .controller.profile from the name

P5 Doesn't know anything about it, the file is actually used by the Nostromo Loadout Manager which configures the device. I figured those with N52s would know what to do with it, but I can certainly add more details. I can't imagine someone buying an n52 just to use this file.

Would using zip files be a reasonable approach? That should protect against malicious files and not constrain the content too badly.

BTW - Thanks for the edits, my one bun contribution actually looks pretty good now.

The .n52 file is not an executable. It is essentially a mapping of keypresses on the n52 to keypresses on the normal keyboard.

I suppose someone could intentionally setup a bogus profile, so that (for example) the button they tell you will start/stop playback actually closes the file without saving it, or something like that. In a test, I was able to program CTRL-ALT-DEL into a profile, so there may be some potential for abuse. But if that's something that concerns you, then the only way around it that I can think of is to look at the profile in the N52 editor before using it. Renaming the extension doesn't really do anything except obscure what kind of file it is.

Belkin Nostromo Speedpad n52 - these sell on the net for under $50 including shipping, might not be a bad investment. Especially if, at the moment, you can't spare the $199 + tax & shipping for a Transport.

    Great idea Andy!

You shouldn't have to pay over ~$25 for one! I know Belkin sells it direct for more, but shop around...

It's a great little device - I use it a lot. Especially for Paint Shop Pro and Autocad - in fact I bought one for work, just for Autocad. The editor leaves a lot to be desired, and it loses it's current shift setting (red, blue, green) whenever dialog boxes come up, but it's still pretty handy for a lot of different programs.

    Andy,

If you have a link it would be appreciated.
(Edit: Oops - I just noticed you wrote "a while back" )

The cheapest I've found it for online is $26.56 (not including tax & shipping) at: Amazon.com - Belkin Nostromo Speedpad

Wow! this Nostromo is very cool. Getting a controller this small could actually be quite an advantage for playing live. Anyone know of similar controllers in this size / features range? - I never thought of looking in the "game" category for controllers.

I've been using my n52 for transport controls, but now y'all got me thinking too. Software companies like Cakewalk should add support for analog stick/throttle controls. You could do some fun real-time stuff with some of the flightsticks, rudders and pedals.
