Not a second time...

You just don't write a I V vi IV song.

If you do, you better have one darn fine melody to put on top of it.

And you may want to at least find a rhythmic structure that isn't totally cliché and redundant.

And obviously, you probably want to keep that masterpiece as short as possible.

But it seems that some people will just throw the old rules book.

My closest neighbor's favorite song for the last 2 weeks  - which he/she listens to very loud EVERY DAY at least a couple of times a day - is one of those pioneering efforts. Must last almost 8 or 10 minutes. 10 minutes of the same ol I V vi IV, w/o a single variation. And to top it all, it also has that obvious 3 or 4 notes miserable excuse for a melody.

Sounds like a very very bad post-grunge 90's made-for-tv college movie generic.

And as I'm typing this, here we go again...

Who are these people living next door????

This is the first sign of becoming pendantic. It reminds me of how a guitarist will spend an enormous ammount of time and energy on getting their tone just right when to 99.9% of the listeners it sounds like a "guitar".

Well, how about calling it: I V iii/IV IV?

    Does that help?

I may very well be pedantic - wouldn't be out of line w/ the rest of my personality. ;)

This reminds me of all those times when I heard pop hits and wondered how dare they? That's the kind of idea I discard the minute I stumble upon it - how can they allow themselves to get away w/ it?

If I figured that one out, I guess I'd be one step closer to never having to worry about money again. I could come up w/ the next Gangnam Style. :P

You're thread title tripped a brain in my wire.

Reminded me of this song ...

    Not A Second Time - The Be-Ottles

    Very funky chord progression.

"I pulled the head off Elvis, filled Fred up to his pelvis, yaba daba do, the King is gone, and so are you."

Must be the 7th time so far today - 3rd in a row... The thing is - I just don't get it.

I could understand them listening to, I don't know, even stuff I don't like, like Lady Gaga or a top 10 hit of some kind. But that song is the most insipid, blend, generic-sounding.

    Totally beige.

True. I took a little pride yesterday when I saw that Gangham Style had had been hit over a billion times and I have not seen it. I've just had no interest, then again I may be missing something I should see. I guess you have to try to maintain a balance and an open mind/ear.

You may hear something I do and think. "yuk"... but I only said I was a musician, I never said I was a good musician.

I hope your neighbor gets off on something else soon... BUT.. you could always approach them and say. "I think you must be a music lover because I can hear your music.
I write music and my wife performs. I was wondering, since you obviously appreciate good music...  if I could get you opinion on a few tunes"? Massage their ego then give them some music you like for thier "professional" apprasial. Ask them to listen to it enough to get used to it then let you know what they think... heh. Then you can hear them pllaying what you want to hear!

So.. are they listening to "elevator music" or "mall music" or what?

I have no idea what it is. I took a break later last night and went outside and of course they were listening to that same song. I tried to hear the lyrics but I couldn't even figure out one line.

That being said,  I still don't know what language these neighbors speak even though I've been exposed to and can recognize quite a few languages. Not this one. My wife and I are still trying to guess. So one of my theories is that this could be a foreign band.

These folks have the most eclectic tastes - at one point yesterday, they were listening to Metallica, then the next thing you know, it's a hip hop version of Dream on. Then lots of hip hop. But they also seem to be big Hendrix fans, and they play lots of classic rock.

Looks like a couple of kids who've just moved out of their parent's house or something. They're ok and I can't really complain - unless I'm standing somewhere closer to our door or outside on the balcony, their music doesn't really bother me.

But since I do spend a lot of time outside, I did end up w/ that darn song stuck in my head all night.

If the music is loud enough you could always get Shazam to tell you what it is (provided you have an iPhone). I use it all the time when I hear a tune I like in coffee shops etc. It works great.

Ok, first, my mistake - this wasn't I V vi IV, but the infamous i VI III VII. I somehow mixed both. Not that this change much to the fact that it's overused.

The band is called Of Monsters and Men, it's an extended live version of a song called Little Talk - and they're currently listening to that awful piece of junk for the 6th time in a row!

I though Iceland was awesome, because, you know, The Sugarcubes/Björk and Sigur Rus... But right now I'm not sure I'll be able to forgive them for that horribly insipid hipster band.

I nominate you for the Arcade Fire award, Iceland!

If I've offended any Arcade Fire or Of Monsters and Men fans - you're welcome! ;)
