Not sure if I'm in

How do you know when your in a band? I showed up for a practice and they set me up between the drummer and the bass player. Everyone was friendly and I was complimented several times on my playing and choice of sounds. The biggest problem was that my amp was too small and within 3 feet of the drums,so it was a struggle to even hear myself. The place must have been 105 with no air conditioning. There were several times when I was playing strictly by fret position because I could not hear myself.

Everyone was friendly at the end and I said something like, I'll let you guys discuss if I'm the kind of a player you are looking for. We parted ways and that was it. I have no idea if they are going to contact me or not. Communication didn't seem to be one of their stronger points.....I guess I'll just wait and see.

I was probably at least 10 years older than all of them,so maybe that is a handicap in their minds. Its a volunteer band with no pay, and I have other things I can be dong so its not the end of the world if it doesn't fly. It was fun but the signals I got were mixed. If I had to guess I would say they are either on the fence, having an internal disagreement, trying some more players or I'm out.

I'd continue with your other stuff unless--or until--you hear anything more.  If communication is their strong now, it probably won't get better.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

If it were me, I'd be asking myself if I really wanted to play with THEM. That's the important thing here in my opinion. In those situations, I'd be of the mindset that I was auditioning them.

I've auditioned for a few bands in my time.  In the mid-80's, I auditioned for a band where I didn't know anyone.  I don't remember how I heard about the audition.  Anyway, the audition went well and they called me up and asked me to come back for a second round.  After that, they called me up again and asked me to come in for one final round of auditions.  After I played with them the third time, I didn't hear from them again. After waiting a couple of weeks, I called them to ask what they had decided.

They had no idea who I was.  They didn't remember me at all.  I reminded them what we had talked about, how I had played, what I looked like, what my drum kit looked like...  Nothing.

I told them that I could understand if I had only auditioned once for them.  After being called back twice, however, I felt the very least they owed me was a phone call saying they were going with someone else.

I suggest that if you don't hear from them, it doesn't hurt to call them just to see if they're still interested.  If they can't remember you, they probably are going another way...

OLD55- Yeah, I am not getting good vibes there with communication.

Randy-  I was  looking them over too but I don't feel I have much to go on so far so I am with holding any judgments. It is kind of like a job interview though. They seemed to need to know what I thought about what they were doing which did throw me for a little loop. These guys won't be playing any big arenas, small town band playing small town gigs. I'm not Eddie Van Halen either ....that might take a few more years of practice :). I am optimistic though, maybe too much so.

UB- Is it ok if I call you "UB"?....were these guys doing drugs? How could you forget someone who had been there several times...wow....I can respect the effort required to lug drum sets and set them up because I helped our drummer out with it every week and man. That's a lot of effort to be forgotten:(  Goes without saying, I would not be the least interested in playing with them.

I have had similar things happen. One time I went to see a guy about playing movie tracks and he was in a part of town where if you look at anyone you could get mugged. He only worked late night hours. Must have slept during the day...anyways it was just weird. He said he liked my  keyboard drum tracks but he wasn't there and we never connected.  I don't like "iffy" stuff like that. Unfortunately many of my past experiences were similar. Almost like the karma( If I belived in it) wasn't there. It was never mean't to fly and as a result didn't click.

    Ain't that the truth...

    [Edited to add...]
Oh, and I think the real reason they didn't "remember" me is that I didn't have enough hair.  I'm pretty sure they just didn't want to admit it.  I think I could have landed the job if I had worn a wig.  Out of spite, though, it would have been a rainbow afro.  ...with antlers.  In reality, I wouldn't want to waste my time with a band that cared more about their look than their sound.

Communication is two way, is there someone you can ring to find out how it went?

Ask questions.  I hate being put on hold at someone else's leisure.

    Meanwhile keep looking.

UB- I seem to have the opposite problem. These guys were all bald. Not even a little  Clown hair on the sides. Hope I'm not bumped because I'm not bald. Bald doesn't work well for me and longer locks have me looking like a troll(not the internet kind).

Jon-  I have their number .Maybe I falsely assumed that it was up to them to contact me. If I don't hear anything I'll give them a ring.

Lemmee see if I've got this straight.  It's a "volunteer" band with NO PAY that practices in a room that's 105 degrees and plays so loud that you can't hear yourself...and all the members are at least 10 years younger than you.  Is that correct?

Post 18 made me smile.... yeah... that would be my take on it too.

If you "get the gig".... you will have to join the loudness wars because the chance of you talking them into playing at a reasonable level is likely about as good as the proverbial snowball in hades.

To "keep up" you would need more wattage and more speaker coverage..... at your expense, to play in a non-paying band...... really?

Short personal experience story: I auditioned back in the early seventies for a group needing a guitarist to play Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and other heavy bands of the day. The group was called "Lucifer" and the biz card said...."Satan's Gift to Music"....  (Are you with me so far?)  This was an established working band that was pretty well known at the time in S Jersey.  So I answered the ad and they came to my house to jam since I had a pretty good sized rec-room.  After running through a few tunes there was a pressing need to make a liquor store run to get more wine and beer.  They had already gone through what they brought with them.

We all returned to the house a bit later. They then said they did have a practice hall where the band's gear and PA and lights were all set up and they wanted to rehearse there with me a few days later. They gave me the address and headed out the door.

My mom came in and we talked a bit. She obviously did not like them because of the name, the motto, and the liquor store run. They left and didn't bother to assist in removing the empty bottles and cans..... But ultimately she left the decision up to me. I pondered the decision for a few days, and decided not to go to the rehearsal hall. A number of factors played into that decision. A big one was the location of the hall .... it was not exactly where a young white boy would want to be found (in Philadelphia) with a car, and some nice musical gear. The second was that the boys in the band were seriously sh**faced by the time we got back to the house, and hanging and playing with guys like that didn't do it for me..... not that I was a prude, but there is a time to party and a time to be serious about business.

They never called back to see if I got lost or whatever.....

I know how this sounds OL PAL.  I was using a 15 watt behringer practice amp that day. The fault was mine only. I have been looking to upgrade anyhow if I start to play regularly, maybe a DT50/DT25

I feel that the experience gained in this will far outweigh what they are paying me lol. I can't think of a better way to polish my chops.

I called yesterday and they want me to come back for another rehearsal . I imported some of their files into Sonar and added my parts in there. The band is tight and has some good original material. They threw stuff at me I didn't know and I was able to play along with it, but thats not necessarily a challenge for someone playing lead parts. Not like finding full chordings on the fly. It is what it is I guess. I just want to get way from the piano for awhile and play with some different people.

    Yep.  And 50W left too.

Actually, the half-stack on the left and the Mike Soldano modded '79 JMP are the only thing that make noise.  The full-stack on the right is actually a prop I had made for a Vegas show of Hair Guitar (a band led by Poison's ex-keyboardist).  Two of my friends were handling guitar duties that week and I was playing in a big world-ranked points dart tournament the following weekend so I got to be a roadie (with a little time up on stage).

Since the Hair Guitar show was a spoof of the 80's hair bands, there was a good bit of comedy thrown in.  Behind the fake stack was actually a Peavey Classic 50/50 and a Pod Pro going to a ADA 2x12 slant stack.  During one song, the singer stopped everyone and said that the stack was in the wrong place so me and another guy run up and move it which, of course, allows the audience to see what it really is and they get a good laugh.

Here's what the fake stack looks like from the back:

BTW - Not an original concept either!  Here's a MUCH bigger fake back line:

    And, from the back...

And here's a pic from a show before Vegas where you can see the (uncovered) ADA Slant Stack, Classic 50/50 and Pod Pro off to the left.
