Not sure whether to install 32 bit or 64 bit version of Sonar X1 Producer on Laptop
I have a Dell XPS L502X laptop running Windows 7 (64 bit). I'm looking at the specs on "My Computer" in Windows Explorer and it says: Intel Core i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz 4.00 GB RAM I'm not sure whether to install the 32 or 64 bit version of X1 Producer on this machine. My main (desktop) DAW is running X1 Producer on Windows XP (32 bit). A few questions... If I plan to work on the same projects with these two machines, will it be easier if they are both 32 bit installations? Will the 32 bit version consume fewer resources on the system? What are the other pros and cons of installing the 32 bit versus 64 bit version of X1 Producer on this laptop? Thanks! Jonathan

If you're looking to share projects I'd install the 32 bit, You can install both the 32 bit and 64 bit, personally I'm only using 64 bit and I try to limit my plugin purchases to 64 bit now too as that's the way things are headed.
Sonar X1 Expanded PE 64 bit Intel i7 2600k oc'd, 16Gb DDR3 RAM, intel 320 SSD OS drive, 7200RPM HDDx2, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit VS 100, Tascam US-2000, UAD2 - Izotope, Fabfilter, NI Komplete 7/Kore2 & +, Spectrasonics+ http://www.maskensmobilestudio.com

Can you and will you ever add memory to your laptop? My main reason for going 64-bit is to address more memory which in turn allows more virtual instruments and plug-ins to run at once. I think you can address 4 GB with 32 bit but no more. (I have 12 GB, for example.) Edit: There were some quirks getting some VIs to run in 64-bit, but they have all been resolved. Unfortunately, the Sweetwater tech did that so I can't tell you exactly how to do it. It took a few remote sessions with Sweetwater to sort things out.

Thanks for the response, Konrad. The laptop was not originally purchased for use as a DAW. The idea of installing Sonar on it was an afterthought... I only plan do simple tasks on it when I'm away from home, like arranging drum tracks. If 32 bit is going to be less hassle with regard to plug-in compatibility, etc., then I guess I will install that version. I'm perfectly happy with Sonar's performance on my XP machine, so I don't think I need the extra performance that 64 bit will provide. Jonathan

The desktop has a 32 bit processor, so that's not an option. Thanks, Jonathan. That was supposed to be a response to Skyodelic. Don't know why it showed up down here :)

Unless you know that you would need more than 4 gigs of RAM on any particular project (which it doesn't sound like you will), then 64-bit is the way to go. If not, 32-bit Sonar would be your best choice. Tom

I'm perfectly happy with Sonar's performance on my XP machine, so I don't think I need the extra performance that 64 bit will provide. Unless you have greater than 4GB of RAM, there's not a huge advantage to running a 64Bit host DAW. You might see a slight performance increase with a 64Bit host and all 64Bit plugins... Note that you can always install the 64Bit version (along side the 32Bit version)... so it's not a "now or never" scenario. If you add RAM in the future, you can install the 64Bit version of Sonar.

Thanks Jim. The one thing I'm still not sure about, though... If I use a 32 bit plugin on a project and then open that project with a 64 bit install, am I gonna get a "plugin not found" error?

Just be sure to pay attention to the installer and be sure you install 32bit plugs into "Program Files (x86)" and not "Program Files". Be sure to point 64bit SONAR's VST scan to include "Program Files (x86)".

there's is no advantage to install Sonar x64 and then force yourself to use 32bit plugins to stay compatible with your main DAW. run Sonar x32 on both machines and you're done!
