Notes don't play at exact times
Hi, I recently composed a few songs with sonar and have noticed that the midi notes don't exactly hit when they should. Also, they don't follow a set pattern either. Its not like every note is behind the beat, it is just a little random and it sounds bad. This started happening when I introduced the EWQL Symphonic orchestra to the synthesizer of my sonar set up. I'm not sure if this is a communication issue or what. Thanks in advance.

Are you entering Midi notes with a keyboard? Is Input Quantize enabled? Tracks>Input Quantize

No, I'm entering mid notes with the score editor and piano roll, and Input quantinize is not enabled.

The problem may be in audio and not Midi. What are your computer specs? What kind of audio interface are you using?

@ Chappel AMD Phenom II x6 Integrated 7.1 surround real-tech Audio ATI 6670 Windows 7 64bit my system works great with playing notes through my keyboard on time with any synth and when a whole song is playing. I'm just wondering if this might be a problem the the EWQL Symphonic orchestra because it seems to only happen with it. The cakewalk synths play on time exactly. @ Kev999 Umm... Snap settings?

Try freezing the EWQL synth, see if the synth is the problem. Snap settings determine where the notes are placed in the staff or piano roll. If you have it set to 1/8 note and want to enter a 1/4 note, you might accidentally put the 1/4 note where a 1/8 note would go, making the note sound too early, or late. See 'Snap-to Grid' in the Help files.

Well, I freeze the synth and the problem was fixed a little but it was still there. Whats happening is I have marcato strings playing quarter notes in a series but they don't match up exactly some come to soon some come late. It creates a wired sound.

gat19g I'm just wondering if this might be a problem the the EWQL Symphonic orchestra because it seems to only happen with it. The cakewalk synths play on time exactly. I suggest routing your Midi tracks to other synths to see if that has any effect on the problem. If it doesn't, that suggests that the EWQL synth isn't the problem. How is the EWQL synth inserted? Instrument track, one stereo output, or all its outputs active?

When I put the midi track into the Studio Instruments Strings it plays on time perfectly (giving a machine gun affect). So I think it really is EWQL.

using your realtek onboard soundcard is probably the problem. EWQL is a resource heavy instrument. what are your latency settings? which driver mode are you using? my best suggestion to you would be to get a "recording" soundcard. if you're only doing MIDI most people don't understand why they need a recording soundcard, but this is one of the reasons. a recording soundcard with good drivers allows you to deal with softsynths (and FX) which use a lot of CPU/resources in sonar. in the meantime, you can try adjusting your latency slider to the SAFE side and see if that helps. that will cause latency when you try to play softsynths live with your keyboard, tho. but it might resolve this issue you're having. you might also try ASIO4ALL. google it, download it, unzip it, install it, then change your driver mode to ASIO.

Wow, it is so much better when I raised the buffer settings. As for the cpu power I don't find my cpu struggling because I have a 6 core processor. The real-tech card definitely is under some strain but it is much better than the one on my previous computer. Thanks a lot!

Ok, I installed the ASIO 4 All and now this think works like a charm. And there is no latency at all. Thank you so much!
