Nothing but Love. Original

http://soundcloud.com/m_g...ing-but-love-feb23-320

I just finished this, or at least as well as I can do it.
Engineering comments welcome of course.
Also what genre would this be?
Thanks for the listen
Glenn

It took me a few moments to warm up to this song, but I soon started to really enjoy it. Its a bit hard to comment on the mix, because it sounds like a lot of things might be intentional, which brings it to the level of subjective. One thing though is the left side is nearly completely missing. I think the instruments need to be a bit more clearly defined and spread out.

    Hey thanks for the comments.
Fox, I do have a couple of guitars on the hard left that come thru to my ears. They are not heavy so did you mean more "weight" on the side?

Significantly. Let me throw the cans on. They might help me define the separation.... ohhhhh... hmmmmm ... did you mix this with cans? Or only near fields? There is a huge difference in the cans versus the monitors here. When it goes out to a wider field the left side disappears. I can say I have rarely heard such a difference before (usually its my own mixes that I have trouble like this with).

Hmm. That IS interesting, and disconcerting.
I do admit mostly mixing with Sennheiser 280 pro cans (my wife was usually home).
However I did do a final check with near fields (rokit 6's with rokit 10" bass) it does come thru about the same.
Could it be a phase thing?

I sincerely do not know Glen. I have a related problem with one of my songs that I have never solved. - edit - my musings about this would only lead you astray I think, so I removed a couple of other edits - sorry

    Love it ...

I think it has a bit of a Gomez feel to it ... maybe its just me .. Couldnt decide what genre your song or Gomez belong to, and was interested to see what others thought ... so had a quick google ... One person suggested its hard to pin Gomez to a genre, but blues seems most apt ...    I dont disagree with that ..   and perhaps this particular song could be described in the same way ..

    Love congo square too ..
    Cheers

    Thanks Brian,
"Congo square" is great I agree but unfortunately it's not mine.
I'll look up Gomez. I do have problems with genre too.
Not that I like labeling but if you are trying to find an audience, it's probably important.
I wondered if I found a genre, I could add some appropriate touches.
EG if I found it was country, add some pedal steel. But if it's blues, then harmonica. Lol.

PS Frank, thanks for picking up on the vox timing. You are right, I've let the groove a little too loose. Ha.

Hi, Glenn, I love this song.  Your voice cuts through the mix very well which makes the lyrics all that more  important.  The bass guitar is very strong, but it has a thick tone and presence that sometimes overwhelms other elements of the mix.  But, the part is terrific.  The drums are nice and thick, too, but in a good way.  It sounds balanced between left and right on my sytem, quite well.  Well done.

    All the best,

Thanks Lynn. Good point about overwhelming bass. I admit I was having too much fun with that track.

Having not read any comments* my first reaction is things sound over compressed or kinda distorted or something.

I like the song but I think the production is getting in the way. Cool bass line/tone though. Drums got a little grating near the end.

Yes I don't really have a confident handle on compression/limiting yet. I mainly do it to get volume so likely I'm overworking the plugs.
I try to keep them all under 4 DB and do a series of them rather than overworking one. I do like the Concrete limiter and that might be the main problem.
    Thanks.
I have managed to keep the PC orange and red flashing to very occasional with gain on the tracks but I guess it needs something else. I don't know what tho.

Hey Glenn- Great little tune.... interesting and different.  Loved the groove you got going... bass part was very cool.  Nice vocal too.

My comments on the production should be weighed in context of the fact that I was listening on my pc speakers, but given that, the mix sounded somewhat 'hot' to me (i.e.- a little over compressed).

Overall though a great listen for me.

    Thanks Phil.
I admit I haven't listened on other speakers yet.
It's good practice that I don't get around to.
I haven't figured out how to get the levels up without over compressing I guess.
I do cut as many unneeded freq's as I can think of.
    Thanks again.

I like the begining guitars. makes you wait for whats coming next. I like this song. Nice groove and feel. The vocals are the icing on the cake. I thought the distortion was on purpose. Kinda like it.
