Noticed in the HW forum.... VS 100 on closeout at SA.

Thanks Fwrend... for the OP.

They have 15 pages of closeout items... one was a Hal Leonard DVD on Sonar5... really. Anyway, if they still have them and you've wanted one, 299 ain't bad. It makes me wonder why. Is this the leading edge of the future of consumer level products, with HW giving place to "touch tech"? Surely companies have to follow the trend of mass consumption in order to stay profitable... are we all going to eat the "Apple" whether we like it or not?

... or does Roland have something in the wings to replace the VS 100, or has the VS 100 just been a slow sell? I wonder.

I'm really not anxious to move to touch tech. For DJing in clubs and people launching loops live in the Matrix view (that's what it's called, right?), I can see how this technology is cool.

For people like me, it'd be a nightmare. If I had to lift up my arm and touch the screen for every mouse click in a session, I'd probably have to give up on making music.

Key commands, a good old-fashionned mouse and a track pad - which allows you to take advantage of certain gestures (swiping, pinching to zoom, etc) in a more ergonomic fashion.

I totally agree Rain but I have this phobia that everything is moving in that direction whether we like it or not. Have you seen the latest Dell catalog? They have a 27" touch monitor that folds back almost flat, tilts up just enough... I'm still not sold on them. The less stress I have to put on my shoulders and upper back the better I am. To use that I would still have to hold my arms out for too long at a time, or I'd have to work standing and that is a non starter for me.

You said the magic word... ergonomics!! Design should follow comfort, IMO.

I thought that version suffered from Y2K failure, no?

If I had to lift up my arm and touch the screen for every mouse click in a session, I'd probably have to give up on making music.

Actually touch screens are on their second attempt. The first try failed largely due to gorilla arm issues, but that was on big (well big at the time) screens mounted vertically. With a too-big-to-be-really-convenient smart phone or a convenient-to-carry-but-too-small-to-type-on-tablet resting on your genitals they make more sense. The audio application users seem to envision them as easy to control interfaces mounted horizontally. Admittedly the insane Disney inspired cartoon knobs on the popular plugin interfaces, are difficult by design to "rotate" with a mouse, but the answer has always been to use a physical control surface with real sliders to do that. Given the cost of a good sized touch screen, and the lack of proprioceptive feedback,  that is still the clear winner.
