"Now Time" Action Screws up Track Information

There was a time when I could place my computer's cursor on the Cakewalk Cursor and move the now time willingly without fear of screwing up the track's placement of the audio's waveform,  Now it seems I have to be very very very careful when I do this for fear of screwing up the tracks  .... extending them or shortening them as I move my mouse.  Is there a preference setting (or some other setting) that I can make that prevents this from happening?
