Nowtime marker and counter stops suddenly after a few seconds
Hi there, Everything worked fine. Now, suddenly, if I start playback, the position counter counts a few seconds, than stops (also the nowtime marker stops). The playback is going on. What's wrong? A graphic problem? No, the Scroll Lock is not set on my keyboard. I'm working with WINDOWS VISTA Ultimate and SONAR PE 6.21. Thanks for help. ;-) Johannes

Hi Johannes, What clock source do you have selected? Check the Clock tab on Options-Project Sounds like you are using SMPTE/MMC with an offset. Best regards, Luis

He, you are the best! The Clock source was set to AUDIO (don't know how this was changed). I've set it to "internal", and it is working fine again! Thanks a lot! Johannes

Just curious - what is the rationale for choosing between audio and internal as the clock source? In what circumstances is audio the correct choice and vice versa?

Hi Christopher, Internal - for projects containing only MIDI (no audio). Audio - for projects contain MIDI and audio, or only audio. You can get the details in Sonar's Help. Search for "clock source". Best regards, Luis

Hi, the fact was: when the first peak of my Audio file appeared (no midi files in this project) the counter / nowtime marker stopped. So it seams that if AUDIO is selected as clock source the AUDIO beats (if available and rythmic) are generating a clock signal. Is this possible? How can an audio-signal (rock musik) generate a clock signal? Anyway, with the setting "Internal" it is working with all my audio projects. best greatings, Johannes

Wow! That is not normal. Yes - that's why I asked about the rationale. As I wrongly assumed OP was talking about mixed audio and MIDI (assumed because in my experience if now time freezes on the display, MIDI freezes too whilst audio tracks continue to play) it seemed to me that audio would be the only satisfactory choice. I am very surprised that OP is able to get smooth audio with internal clock. If I select internal with audio clips, they become choppy and distorted. Whenever I have had the now time freeze phenomenon, I have assumed it is a conflict between the graphics driver and the audio driver. I have generally resolved it by tinkering with buffers (including extending the MIDI playback buffers). Eventually it goes away, but I have not been scientific in my methods so I cannot say categorically what worked.

Some more information: I found it in the SONAR manual: Clock source "Audio": the Clock source of the sound board is used. Clock source "Internal": the clock source of the computer CPU is used. The others are external clock sources, of course. Thanks for all responses Johannes

If I import an Audio file it switches my Clock to "Audio" which makes my "Now Time" and progress bar freeze when I press play. I have to switch it back to "Internal" so I can see my "Now Time" and progress bar. Surely this is not the way to have to do this. Is there a setting of some sort that can fix this? I am using EMU 0404 PCI and have no problem hearing/recording but can't get that Clock sorce from screwing up my "Now Time" Any ideas???? Thanks

Hi Marcus, "If I import an Audio file it switches my Clock to "Audio" ..." - That is the normal behavior. What I don't think is normal is that you have to switch to Internal. Just an idea: 1. Run the Wave Profile. 2. Check in General tab of Options-Audio what you have set as the "Playback Timing Master" and what can you choose there. How many soundcards have you got? Is the motherboard's built in soundcard disabled in BIOS? Regards, Luis

I'm ASIO drivers and E-MU ASIO 1/2 is the "Playback Timing Master" In WDM it's the E-DSP Wave. In WDM mode it records/plays back and the "Now Time" and progress bar work fine. In ASIO mode I can record/Play back but "Now Time" and Progress bar stop after about 1 beat. Just 0404 pci is installed. Should not the E-DSP wave show up in the Properties of the Sound system as a Recording device? It doesn't show up in mine however I am able to record audio through my S/PDIF using my Boss GT-8 guitar processor. I"m using Vista by the way! Thanks for your quick response. Mark

I still have the same problem Hanni Hanni did. Everytime I import audio it changes back to "Audio" clock which I understand it should anyway.BUT when it does the marker and now time freeze but still able to record and hear everything. I can switch it back to "internal" every time I go to record but that is not how it should be done. I have the 1.82 drivers for my 0404Pci card. I recall before when I was having conflicting driver issues in which I had a previously installed Audigy 2 that it's driver output was showing up in the "Record Latency Adjustment" area as the Device and I had no problem at that time with the freezing. Of course now that the drivers have been cleaned out and I did a "Virgin" install the Audigy drivers are gone and the freezing is back. E-MU ASIO (4in-1out) is the device now which I'm sure should be correct. I have Reaper 2 and all works great in that program so it must be something to do with the way my sound card is set up in Sonar. Is ther a way to "reset" the defaults in the Audio preferences? Any help would be greatfull. Thanks,

I have the 1.82 drivers for my 0404Pci card. There are Beta version 2 drivers available (indirectly) via E-Mu's website. Follow the instructions carefully and don't panic if any existing session files appear not to work - they will once they are saved afresh in the v2 PatchMix. The usual Beta dis-claimers apply, but I have found them to be better than 1.82, except that they cause infrequent, sporadic clicks. I have learned to live with this, as the clicks are only audible on playback - they are not embedded in any incoming audio. E-Mu's website says that the Beta drivers will be replaced by a full release about now, but E-Mu's delivery promises are often optimistic. Update - I have just seen that E-MU has posted a revised Beta - I haven't yet tried this yet, so my comments relate to the withdrawn Beta, of course.

Hi Chris, I have tried to install the older Beta 2's and the new ones that came out on the 11th countless times. All I kept getting was BSOD as the drivers are being installed Yet the 1.82's install fine. I've tried "virgin install" and everything I could think of but still BSOD. There isn't even a code or line break on anything on the screen...just blue! I'm fed up with spending hours to get it to work with the new "beta" drivers. I honestly feel it's in my settings that need tweeking. If anyone has the 0404pci running in Sonar 6.2.1 please send me your settings in the Audio Options tabs. That would be very much appreciated. Thanks,

Forgive the question, but are you sure that you are seeing a BSOD? I ask because I have never seen a "blank" BSOD as you describe. Have you tried alt-tab when you get the blue screen during the attempted driver install? This will help you to see whether there is a hidden driver install "health warning". E-Mu's instructions used to warn about this possibility. FWIW, I installed the revised Betas without any issues today. At first blush, they seem fine, although my unwanted clicks are still there. Are you trying to use WDM or ASIO? Both seem to work for me, but others seem to have more success with one than the other. Here are my Sonar audio settings for comparison - settings 1 settings 2

Ok...tried the reinstall thing again...yup...BSOD with no message. No keyboard stroke would do anything. Hard drive activity was zero for 15 minutes. After rebooting I looked at the PatchMix About screen and noticed that Driver version 6.xxxx was there. The PatchMix error message said it didn't find enough E-MU hardware. The speaker Properties tab is missing the Levels tab. I installed the PatchMix of the Sept 11 release and rebooted. Same PatchMix error and same missing tab Driver version reverted back to 5.xxxx. E-MU knowledge base has nothing on BSOD that Icould find. Thank god for Restore points....rolling back to 1.82 (again). Thanks for sending your Sonar settings...tried them and still no change. I noticed you don't have Vista (check box greyed out in screen shot) I'm using ASIO drivers. I've sent a Support request to E-MU. These latest drivers had a number to call if you had problems so I'm assuming they are supported. And of course it's not a toll free number. I'm begining to really like Reaper....sorry! Thanks for all your effort Chris....very much appreciated.

Sorry to hear you are still struggling! Did you try alt-tab (or even alt-crtl-del) rather than rebooting from the "stuck" blue screen? Doing so would at least let you see whether the PC "thinks" it's doing something else. You should certainly take a look at the log - my guts tell me there will be some useful information there. Also, it sounds like you did manage to install the v2 E-MU drivers - that message about insufficient hardware is normally associated with an attempt to load an inappropriate session file. I certainly got this message when I went from 1.82 to 2.0. The remedy for me was simply to load the default session that corresponded to my situation, then customise it, then save it. As PatchMix attempts to load the most recent session file at each re-start, you will only have to do this once. You could also try switching Sonar to WDM. FWIW PatchMix About in my set-up says - PatchMixDSP version: 2.00.00 Driver Version: 6.0.1.1242 File Version: 2.00.00.0017 Good luck!

From the help file of Sonar 6 PE Choosing Clock Sources: SONAR as Master -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When SONAR is used alone, or with an external device that does not have its own clock or timing signal, you use one of two clock sources: Internal or Audio. When the clock source is set to Internal, SONAR uses the clock built into the computer or the computer's MIDI interface as its timing source. If your projects contain only MIDI (no audio), this is the most efficient method of playback. If your projects contain MIDI and audio, or only audio, you should set the clock source to Audio. This lets the sound card clock determine the correct speed for audio playback and automatically synchronizes MIDI playback to match the audio. For more information, see System Configuration. You cannot use the tempo ratio controls when using the audio clock, because the audio playback speed is determined by the audio clock. When either of these clock sources is used, you can also configure SONAR to drive other MIDI devices using MIDI Synchronization. For more information, see MIDI Synchronization. If you need to send MIDI Time Code (MTC), SONAR will send this data regardless of the clock setting. To Use the Internal Clock Source Click on the Sync toolbar. OR Choose Options-Project, and click the Clock tab. Check the Internal box. Click OK. To Use the Audio Clock Source Click on the Sync toolbar. OR Choose Options-Project, and click the Clock tab. Check the Audio box. Click OK. Best John

When I installed the up to date PatchMix it went back to version 5. I'll admit I didn't try to load a different session because of the version reverting back to 5 and I figured there was a compatability issue between the old drivers and new PatchMix. Mabey I'll get adventurous later and try again. Thanks

If I switch it back to "Internal" even with audio files in my project it works fine. Then if I add another audio file it goes back to "Audio" as it should but "Now Time" freezes again. I figured there was a compatibility issue between the old drivers and new PatchMix. I think you figured right - E-MU's install instructions are very particular about installing the new drivers, then the new PatchMix. What happens if you de-select all audio drivers under Options - Audio - Drivers and then restart Sonar? Does the Now time still freeze when you press play? On my rig, Sonar will happily play (inaudibly, of course) with no drivers selected. If yours still freezes, that would suggest that your problem is not audio driver related - maybe graphics driver issues, or PCI bus contention (perhaps caused by a device with latency set too high). I hate to nag, but have you checked the systems log, yet?

Hey Chris, I deselected the drivers and restarted and Sonar and the now time works just fine in "Audio" so it appears maybe the drivers are "not happy" in Sonar. As I said in one of my posts Reaper works just fine. I must admit I've been using Reaper for a few days now and it's very impressive especially for the price. As far as the log goes....ah...where do I find it? I've done a lot of things on my computer but that is not one of them! Give me a full name for it because I did a search for "log" and got more results than you can shake a stick at. Thanks,

As far as the log goes....ah...where do I find it? Bear in mind that I am using XP (although I would be surprised if Vista is hugely different). You don't search for the log file directly. Rather you use Administrative Tools - Event Viewer to inspect the various logs. In XP, where this appears in the Start Menu is highly configurable, and I can't remember where it appears by default - try Control Panel first. Or maybe look in help for Event Viewer. The Event Viewer picks up a number of logs. The two of interest to you are System and Application. Any BSODs are likely to be listed in System and they will be type "error". If you open the error item, you will get the salient information about the error (and maybe a link to an MS help or diagnostic resource). Also, have you tried the so-called unofficial E-Mu forum?
