If you have ASUS AI Suite II installed, turn it off. It will randomly start throwing latency spikes due to the motherboard monitoring it performs. I had that impacting my Asus Crosshair V Formula occasionally. The 990FX chipset is rock solid and the SATA controllers or USB ports shouldn't pose a problem.

markyzno Come on Alex, dont get all self depreciating (especially with your edit of post)...you do an amazing job here....My quibble was about driver boost, nothing personal, the only win here is to help fellow Sonar users make the most out of their software.

Thanks I feel more cheery after reading this... It can be heavy going sometimes. .

Hi Seth, Thanks for the info. It is not installed. This is a lean installation machine here. It is only used for music. I have a INET computer for e-mail and the likes.

Just out of curiosity, is your interface in a USB2 or USB3 port (I assume your sig is indicating you are using USB as opposed to firewire)? If its a USB3 port, you might try a USB2 port. The other thing you can try is a dedicated USB2 card (I added one and it improved performance of another DAW I was using prior to going to Sonar).

I will not be using that driver boost program again. I checked everything manually before and I had the latest and greatest. I found it highly suspect that the utility found 12 items to update. After that update, I was all hosed up. hours later, I am now back to where I was before running that program.
It is a cool concept, but it bit me in the arse...
I appreciate the help though Alex. ;)

Hi, Conley. I have been battling drum sequencing demons all day, and still have about 60 measures to put together by hand. (I don't loop) Anyways, I thought I would see where things stand for you at this point. I do confess that I skipped a large chunk of the middle of these 3 pages, but did pop in about half way down page 2 through to here. Have you ever run DPC Latency Checker and/or LatencyMon? These are freeware programs that you would download and run, to get an idea of your system's basic ability to handle streaming audio, such as what Sonar does. Last I checked DPC Latency Checker does not run on Windows 8, but works great on Win 7, and LatencyMon works well on both 7 and 8. Here is the link for DPC Latency Checker: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml And, LatencyMon: http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon Run one or both the above, without Sonar running, to get an idea of where things stand at the system level. If there are latency spikes outside of Sonar, then those need to get analyzed and resolved prior to dealing with any performance analysis/resolution within Sonar. I am off to sequence up some more drums, but will gladly escape frequently from that to check on this thread and a couple of others I am looking into. Bob Bone

There appears to be some issue with X3 and RME's drivers. There are a few of us using RME units and who are having similar issues (pops, clicks, lags, inability to change ASIO buffers within Sonar without restarting, poor performance in general). Our experiences are quite similar - we have systems are very stable and glitch free under prior Sonar versions (e.g., X2, 8.5) but have issues with X3 that appear driver related. The fact that these older versions of Sonar still work well suggests it is not some hardware issue, nor even a driver issue per se, but something about how Sonar X3 is interacting with the drivers. Common potential fixes such as deleting Aud.ini and rescanning plugins have not helped. In my case the situation is not terrible but a nuisance. I can still do work, but the pops and lags etc. are an annoyance and a bit of an embarrassment when working with clients. Seth, I hope you are still monitoring this thread. Any way you can look into this? I have posted a similar request on the RME forums but again I suspect it is a problem on Sonar's end more than RME's.

Aside from drivers, I used the latency checker (back when I was still on X2) to help identify and close a mobo utility that was creating problems. I also find that Gobbler even at its lowest settings can interfere. That being said, while these fixes help overall performance the driver issue described above remains.

Conley, Oops, I said the same (should have refreshed the thread). Running the tools can report if something is taking longer than it should. The latency check tool is good for a general view but won't tell you why. The resplendence one will report specific driver names and is more useful for trying to pin down a cause. Keith

My system is at a great performing setup I believe. I think X3 may need to be looked at with reference to RME drivers possibly as suggested earlier.
After booting my system this morning, all indicators of performance tell me that I should not be having these issues. I still get pops and clicks on start stop, 80% of the time, and during playback and some recording with playback.

@Guitarmech111 - thanks for going through that exercise. That DID show your system as being quite capable of handling the streaming audio, which as a good thing. So, apologies if you posted this earlier, but can you please post: 1. Sample Rate in both Sonar and for your audio interface 2. Record Bit-Depth in Sonar 3. Audio interface ASIO Buffer Size (or whatever they call it on your interface) 4. Latency values reported in Sonar (input, output, total roundtrip) I suggest a starting point: Sample Rate of 44.1 k or 48 k (Sonar must match interface on this), ASIO Buffer Size of 128 on audio interface, Record Bit-Depth of 24, record and playback buffers of 512. At least your system should handle it, so hopefully some tweaking of settings can help some. Bob Bone

You might want to check the Control Panel to see if ASIO4ALL is indeed installed or not. Probably not if you're not aware of it...but you never know.

robert_e_bone @Guitarmech111 - thanks for going through that exercise. Bob Bone
I use 48k/24 bit 128 - 256 samples in the ASIO buffer panel for record and playback. 256 seems worse, but that may just be a fluke. No ASIO4ALL installed 155, 196 and 351 latency values.

Those settings should work OK for your system. I use 128 for my ASIO Buffer Size, and the combination of it all keeos my total roundtrip latency at just under 10 milliseconds. So, on to something else then - I will keep looking at things when I get back this afternoon. Bob Bone

Just for my education, why would an ASIO buffer of 1024 be "too much" as mentioned above. I do not disagree, but just want to understand the disadvantages of a larger number. Melodyne recommends 1024 but many people here say that is not necessary.
