OK Something that is really beginning to tick me off. - Not Solved
There is no way to slip edit either end of clip that has fade in or fade out. The NotSoSmartTool wants to adjust the fades, and will not allow me to slip edit the clip. I have to remove the fades before I can slip edit a clip. Anyone else notice this? I should be able to place the cursor at the bottom of a clip and slip edit. right? or am I off my nut? To test, split a clip and be sure there are fades where you split the clip. Now try to slip edit and you cannot slip edit the clips once there is a fade there. The Smart Tool wants to edit the fade. Sonar X2.

Works for me. I see the slip edit behavior changes depending on where the mouse is along the edge of the clip. There is a slight change to the mouse icon and a small tick mark showing where the slip edit behavior changes.

scook Works for me. I see the slip edit behavior changes depending on where the mouse is along the edge of the clip. There is a slight change to the mouse icon and a small tick mark showing where the slip edit behavior changes. What I have noticed is that if there is no space between the clips I cannot slip edit. The cursor remains the fade adjust no matter where it is located at the edge of the clip. However, if there is a little space between the clips, it works correctly with or without fades are on the clips. If the clips touch or overlap, then they cannot be slip edited unless the fade is first removed. Hope the above made sense... Currently trying to finish an album and keep checking the forum every few...

Yeah... it all depends on where your cursor is. I found that a little weird to work with in X1. One section will slip edit while moving the whole fade. Another will leave the top of the fade curve in place (making the fade shorter or longer). I think they changed some of that in X2 though so check the manual (I think some of that stuff has to be done with the header bar and smart tool but I haven't tried yet... I'm about to though). Best suggestion I've got is zoom the track vertically so you have more area to activate the different functions. If the clip is too small it can be tricky to get the right function (which is why I hated layers). Cheers.

Oh... in that case try zooming out horizontally. Might help.

I have noticed it if it is a tight fade I can't slip edit & yes it does get aggravating as hell. I have to either removed the fade or make it much longer to be able to get the mouse/smart tool to go to the slip editor.

Thanks guys! It appears to be project specific. It was really frustrating because it added a ton more work. Anyway, I fiddled thru the project and got it done. Tested another project and everything is working as expected. Thanks again!

Started work on a new album and have discovered that the problem is *not* project specific. I've bumped the thread, and edited the title to "Not Solved" because this is an apparent bug. Even simple audio track that has a fade in, or fade out cannot be slip edited unless the fade is first removed. Is there a Key Combo that will allow me to force the cursor to change to the slip edit function? At least this would be a better workaround.

I'm not sure why you are seeing this and not that it helps you much but it isn't "normal". You should be able to slip edit any clip with a fade. The top corners are the fades the rest of it slip edits but the bottom third will slip edit but not move the fade. It's working here even on minimised clips. Is it every clip?

You should see a bar at the top of any clip above the threshold setting which I can't recall off the top of my head. They can be hidden though by selecting "Maximum Waveform Height" from the TV--->View-->Display menu. . That still doesn't affect the slip editing feature though, it just moves the hotzones for clip selection to a top bottom split a la X1 rather than the header/body split with them.

This works and is better in X2 than in previous versions - at least under my touch. However, this is a smal but significant part of Sonar that can still be massively improved. I'd like to just grab a point on the clips and adjust it, fade or edge, rather than aiming in at a specific point that isn't that easy to find in the first place. And when fading it seems that the slip edit zone is decreased by a lot! But it seems to be better in X2 so that's a step in the right direction at least

This thread was started when I was comping another album and noticed the behaviour on tracks that I had used the split tool, and then could not slip edit if there were a fade at the split. I had to remove the fade and then slip edit and reapply the fade. It did not matter where the cursor was located on the clip as it would not change from the fade tool. I have noticed the above behavior even on whole tracks. It is really an annoyance as it is making more work out of a simple edit. It does not happen on every clip. It appears to mostly happen where there is little to no gap between clips. For instance at a split, at the beginning of a track, and sometimes happens at the end of a track.

When this options is enabled, the waveform display spans the full height of clips.

Dude... if it's at split points did you try zooming in more like I mentioned? If you are zoomed out too far the Smart Tool won't hook into the hotspots properly. I have to zoom out every time I slip edit or change fades. Seriously try it. If you already have then IDK what could be going on because it's working here and I've been editing for the past few days in X2.

There is no way to slip edit either end of clip that has fade in or fade out. The NotSoSmartTool wants to adjust the fades, and will not allow me to slip edit the clip. I've been having the same problem - but I just went back in to SONAR and played around, and it *does* seem to depend on how high or low on the clip edge you go. I don't really see a "system" but (even on a minimised clip) if I go up and down the edge of a clip with a fade on it - the cursor changes from the "slip edit" one to the "fade edit" one. As a matter of fact - sometimes it seems to like the mouse slightly *outside* of the clip - for slip editing. interesting....

I think they figured that you "should" be zooming in real far when working on slip edits & fades so now you Have to or it doesn't work right. Zoom in bro & it works fine then. I don't like it either but it is what it is.

I'm not sure why you're having trouble with fades and slip edits but I've just knocked up a short and sweet video so you can see how it should work. You'll see I'm zoomed out as far as I can vertically and if I zoom much further out horizontally my poor old eyes won't see the clip nevermind be able to edit it. Perhaps there some sort of graphic bug at work here? Short video here

Hey guys Thanks for the replies. Karl, thanks for taking the time to do a video. 99.9% of the time slip editing works as advertised. I thought I somewhat had a recipe for when it would act up. But with a recent project that theory went to poop. I don't know why it randomly chooses not to work. Most of the time it is when there is little or no space between clips the cursor refuses to change to anything other than the fade tool regardless of where the cursor is placed on the clip. I thought about posting a video showing the behavior however there is little point. The problem exists (for me anyway) and is easy enough to understand what is happening. All a video would do is cause head scratching as to why it is doing it. Since others do not seem to be having a problem with it, it shows the problem is not universal and there is little point in filing a bug report. I am currently working on another album and have noticed the behavior 1 time on 1 project. Hopefully I will not run into another problem like I had with the project that caused me to start this thread. Thanks again! :)

That works okay as well here. In the video I split the clip and although I don't dwell on it I do drag a fade and slip edit at the split. It seems strange that it's affecting some and not others which is why I wonder whether it's a graphic bug of some sort. I use ATI graphics BTW.

Here's a vid of the problem. http://www.screencast.com/users/KevinBurrell/folders/Default/media/cc7caee4-27ab-47d1-9d85-fbb4a1ebb994 This shows the problem at the beginning of a clip. This one is very easy to work around. I can zoom in on the clip (which I should not have to do), or remove the fade to slip edit. However, my major complaint is when comping and there is no room between clips, zooming does not work. The fade must first be removed before the clip can be slip edited. Again 99.9% of the time slip editing works. I was curious if anyone else has noticed this behavior. If so, it should be reported as a bug.
