Young People Prefer "Sizzle Sounds" of MP3 Format

Hugh Pickens writes

"Jonathan Berger, a professor of music at Stanford, tests his incoming students each year by having them listen to a variety of recordings which use different formats from MP3 to ones of much higher quality, and he reports that each year the preference for music in MP3 format rises. Berger says that young people seemed to prefer 'sizzle sounds' that MP3s bring to music because it is a sound they are familiar with. 'The music examples included both orchestral, jazz and rock music. When I first did this I was expecting to hear preferences for uncompressed audio and expecting to see MP3 (at 128, 160 and 192 bit rates) well below other methods (including a proprietary wavelet-based approach and AAC),' writes Berger. 'To my surprise, in the rock examples the MP3 at 128 was preferred. I repeated the experiment over 6 years and found the preference for MP3 — particularly in music with high energy (cymbal crashes, brass hits, etc) rising over time.' Dale Dougherty writes that the context of the music changes our perception of the sound, particularly when it's so obviously and immediately shared by others. 'All that sizzle is a cultural artifact and a tie that binds us. It's mostly invisible to us but it is something future generations looking back might find curious because these preferences won't be obvious to them.'"

50 years from now we are going to be nostalgic for that "warm" "rich" 320 kbps vbr. i'll be sure to hold onto my powerbook G4 with Itunes 4 so I can capture that vintage mp3 sound for years to come...

do you really wonder about this?
people used to eat real food back some years ago - today the eat genetically modified, aromatized, convenience food that tastes like **** when compared to the stuff the grandmothers cooked - and we all (have to - cause often ther is no alternative) use cheap asian products builty by chinese slaveworkers who get poisoned during work and we or our pets get poisoned from their crap when we use it - or from the cancerogen agents in their shoes or cklthes ..and so on .. slowly the world is turning into place of "no quality" thanks to supercapitalism...

    cheers

edit: and even more worrying: people play guitaremulations today instead of real guitars - hahaha - cultures down the drain anyway

but it's a case of whats the "norm" to them.. much as you have a record. and younger people will think it's from a different era..

part of it is probably this whole brick walling thing.. hopefully in time the backlash will continue..

the more albums metallica release with the levels STUPID the better, it will accelerate the process.hehe

(as you can tell I was never a fan, so maybe slight bias)

but I dislike how the content of the tune has shifted from content to over all production, I guess is my angle on it.

I record all my mp3s to cassette tape and then master to vinyl and finally copy to a CDs (for archival purposes).

That's retro sizzle to the max.

Hmm. Sorry to be pedantic, but if I bounce a guitar solo onto real tape, and rerecord that digitally (especially through some maximizer) there *is* added value: the harmonics are different, and I've not yet found any *real* digital equivalent for that process. Doesn't mean there are no good digital tape fakers, but they can't really go there.

Mp3 is essentially just a repeatable process of digitally tossing out information, it doesn't really *add* a thing.

Screw this crap. It's fine for in the car, but when I want to relax and listen to music, it's '70s Aerosmith on my VPI turntable.

It's really a disservice to the forum to get this thread on-topic, but a similar thing happened in the early days of "High Fidelity".

RCA developed an early hi-fi system for the mass market. During the market tests, they did A/B tests with the general public. They put the new hi-fi system and a conventional phonograph behind an acoustically transparent curtin. Although the hi-fi system was a real step forward in terms of sound quality, the public preferred the old phonograph because it "sounded natural."

Makes you wonder how much of the audio detail that get worried about around here is ever heard.
