How about continuing to use your monitors, but get a reference sample from her and use HarBal (or similar) to match the frequency balance of this reference file. You could then make your own judgement as to how close you want to get to it, or even give her a couple of mixes varying from what you see as right through to a match from her file.

What an excellent suggestion! Why didn't I think of that?

You could also consider tossing a mix in the song forum, and make it downloadable

Since I started the thread here, I'll put the link here.

Quick background: "Reference" song is what was given to me by the producer. "We all like this song. Do something like this"
Well, OK... not my favorite genre. "My Version" is my attempt of getting close without plagiarizing.

Sounds like many of you recommend HAR-BAL. I checked the website. Seems pretty simplistic. 'Push button to fix'. Must be more to it then that.
Do you put on Master buss or individual tracks or either?

Neither, it's not a plugin. Your link's not OK somehow, it logged me out of my account, and tells me I need to accept cookies on reclicking. Ahem.

LOL! I see what you mean. HarBal will work PERFECTLY for that situation. That's your answer!

HarBal is not a plugin. It's a stand-alone app that works AFTER your mixdown. It's very simple to use and very powerful at the same time. In addition, it's not real expensive. It will give you EXACTLY what she's after.

No, no, no. Do not push that button!

That damn "push button to fix" feature is what's given Har-Bal a bad reputation. Unfortunately, it's marketed as a no-brain mastering tool, and it's not. If you use it you study and analyze tracks, then trust your ears to MANUALLY adjust, it's really great.

The other option of course is to just use a good analyzer on the master buss to get a spectrum of your tune and adjust the old fashioned way. Actually I do have GlissEQ though I've not used it much. I could use it for spectral analysis and comparing spectrum snapshots.

OK, got it. Cannot download the mp3 yet (not cleared yet)- but she's right BTW, yours sounds dorky on my (also dorky) pc-speakers. Her's much less so. Could also be in the mix, but will try to up your version as-is. Hers too

I understand that she wanted it close to the reference track but that's just too close. The feel is what she wanted but you even copied the key and the chords with little variation. Plus it needs more feel to it. If that's what she wanted she might as well just use the reference track and be done with it. Sorry if it sounds rude 'cause it's not meant to be but that's just my opinion. Take care!

Just played with that demo on a tune that was exquisitely done, and no plug I had or anything I tried would make it sound any better, only same or worse. Guess it was already Har-Bal'ed and Ozone'd to the *hilt*.

Until GlissEQ that is. (also tried that HarmonEQ BTW, not the same thing at all)

Takes some fiddling, and (surprise) I learned to set my volume even *lower*, but that is one [HEAVILY CENSORED] amazing EQ, and exactly my type of controls, fiddle it by ear in 'joystick' mode. Going to get me some better speakers tomorrow and order that, should be enough for my needs for now.

Nope, still won't let me download it. You probably forgot to turn something on or whatever.
