OT: Foreigner sound search

A buddy of mine is looking to create or get a groove clip of (legal copy not a straight sample from the original) of the keyboard sound/sequence from the into of "Feels Like The First Time".

Anyone know where I could get such a thing or how it was done?

Sorry Eric. I don't know. Just wondering if you own a hayabusa 1300r. If so, that is pretty sweet.

You got it dude. Actually I sold it though (snif snif). I had a limited edition solid copper metallic/orange w/full Micron exhaust and PCIII controller, undertail etc. 200 mph capable no **** (but I only had it up to 155). Really really sweet. I bought a house so I am bike-less for now. I am jonesing pretty hard for a Ducati lately.

Based on a quick listen and the release date of 1977, I'm going to guess that's an ARP (analog synthesizer). The pattern was probably generated using the ARP step sequencer, running at a very fast tempo. It could have been a different synth, or it could have been an arpeggiator instead of a sequencer, but that's my best guess. It's a 6 note sequence (two triplets) played over and over, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out, especially if you can slow it down. There's another 4-note sequence that plays over the bridge, using the same approach.

As long as we are at it. How about the synth part in Foreigners "long, long, way from home"? the part that it comes in with the opening guitar riff. I always wondered what that was. You know what song I am talking about?

Don't hold me to it, but I'd say it's the same thing. Step sequencer running very fast, except it's just one note, and the change is played on the keyboard. The way the sound "opens up" is by sweeping the cutoff frequency of the LFO from low to high while the note plays.

You got the sweeping LFO part right, but the LLWFH intro isn't a step sequencer, it's a second LFO modulating the amplitude envelope, set to a square wave with 100% LFO depth and a fast pace. And I think it's a chord, not a note (although that, I could certainly be wrong about. Been 4 years since I last programmed that patch for my covers band.) HTH

Cool. Sounds right. Like I said, "don't hold me to it". And when I said "LFO" I meant low pass filter. That's what happens when you reply off the top of your head. The sweep could have been done manually or with a slow LFO. Sounds like a lot of resonance, too.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try to program a patch for this. What CW synth could this be best done with?

Any soft synth that uses analog-style subtractive synthesis should be able to get you close. Rapture can probably do something suitable, or Z3TA+. If it was an ARP as I suspect, the only way to get really identical would be to have an ARP emulator. I think there are a few different ones out there. I have this one: ARP 2600 V
