There ARE two different kinds of sustain pedal, for lack of better terms a "positive" and "negative" polarity pedal. Most modern keyboards automatically detect the polarity of any sustain pedal plugged into them and adjust themselves accordingly. Older boards like the one you mentioned cannot detect the polarity of the pedal, and if your board uses a "positive" type pedal and you have a "negative" pedal plugged in, you'll experience the "reverse sustain" effect that you've described. You need to find a pedal that is compatible with the board. There are some pedals that have a polarity switch on them to make them universally compatible - might be worth trying to track one down.
