OT: Vintaged Guitars

Hey, I've been looking at getting a new instrument and had some thoughts about getting one of those factory aged things. I found a Fender Esquire that is cool because it's a model that can't be found as a regular production model but I'm a little put off by the idea that it's not relly used it just looks used. I usually buy used instruments and I'm not picky about a few nicks and scratches but it just doesn't seem right somehow to get something that some guy took acid and an emory cloth to, just to make it look vintage.

Any thoughts on the subject?

I'm not sure what I think about those things. I wouldn't mind a beat-up guitar if it were used or if it looked like that because I'd played it for twenty years, but it's strange to buy one new that looks beat-up because it was made that way on purpose. Do you take care with it, to protect it from dings that would ruin the factory dings? Do you relax and treat it like a pair of pliers or any other tool that you would never worry about scratching? I guess I'd be worried about the relic marks not looking or feeling authentic. Old marks in a guitar's finish are going to have dirt and stuff down in the cracks; are new relic guitars like that? If it really looks and feels like an old guitar, I'd say it's cool. If not, it would seem fake and not cool.

    CJ,

It's what ever you like really. I think the real question is dopes it have the tone and feel you like? If not go find one that does.

    Horrible bloody things IMO.

And WHY exactly would anyone want to own one?

Your playing will let others know if you've been gigging for years, not the state of your axe

Mind you, I see Fender are selling a Tele beat up to look like Joe Strummers!

    Tempted.... nah

That's a manifestation of the baby boomer philosophy. I would buy a guitar that looks used because it actually HAS BEEN used. I would never consider a guitar that is new but manufactured to look used. That's phony and fake. My old LP is beat up, but we've earned every nick, dent, scratch, scrape, abrasion and contusion on it. That's known as character.

I think your dead on. Funny enough, when I called up to find out about ordering a new Fender, I found out that it will cost me more than $1000 extra to get a guitar with the relic treatment. Gibson is just as bad but they don't seem to beat up theirs as much. Plus all their stuff is so expensive, what's another 1K gonna hurt.

For extra authenticity, you could specify that if you're getting your new 'vintage' axe delivered that the word 'Fragile' on the box be changed to 'Bounce me around a lot in the back of the van and then drop me a couple of times - owner is a moron'.

Seeing the guitars from a distance they look good. Up close they are too perfectly damaged. It does however remind me of gig I played in my youth when all the bands playing seemed proud of their pristine strats/lp's etc. I had a battered 1950s Precision bass that I won in a game of cards, that has been my workhorse axe for years now. Some of the youngsters looked shocked when the headlining act produced his Strat. They had obviously never seen the late great Rory Gallagher before.
