OT could i conceivably do this?

ok, go ahead and laugh at my idea.

i have more usb inputs in my system than i truly need. is it possible for me to remove one of them and install a pci-e in the same slot? i'm pretty sure it's not, but hey, i can dream, right?

I'd say no, but you didn't provide enough info. What do you need it for?

If you're using a laptop, you could get a docking station that would let you add PCI cards.

The USB ports on a desktop machine usually do not occupy any PCI slots on the motherboard, but you can buy a PCI card to add more USB or Firewire ports. If that were the case you could remove the card from the PCI slot and then you'd have another slot.

In the olden days, you could buy an expansion chassis which would allow you to add more cards to a PC/XT. I actually had one of those. I looked up expansion chassis, and found a site that sells them. Not sure if its PCI or PCIe.. and they're not cheap.

The beauty of USB and Firewire is that you'd have a hard time using up all the potential devices you could have attached and you're not limited to the number of slots on your motherboard.

theoretically, how would these expansion chassis be connected to a pc?

You'd do it through a buss connector on the motherboard, where all the contacts are exposed.

But I know of no external buss multiplexor device available for PCI-E. It's way impractical, and highly improbable due to timing problems. The bandwidth of PCI-e is much higher than serial connectors because it moves data in parallel (it's a buss, right?).

Ouch, the prices on that site Dave!

It would be much cheaper to go ahead and remove ALL the USB ports, along with the rest of the motherboard, and install a new motherboard! Then you could have more PCI/PCIe slots. I suppose another option might be to run a second machine in conjunction with the first, via ethernet LAN, and use the PCI cards you wanted in the second machine. You'd have to figure out a way to access the functions provided by those PCI cards from the first machine of course.
