OT: what is the deal with Soundclick???
I just went to check out the "charts" at Soundclick.com ....I don't get it, what determines the placement. If you go check out the number 1 rock song-instrumental (Jim Jones-we bang) you'll see what I mean. Do these people get all their friends to vote or something? TIA, Randy

It is what it is. Dont put any kind of importance into it. The placement is determined by the # of hits, thats all, its not by how good it is....There fun, if anyhting cj

It's the web version of American Idol...The more often someone votes (clicking on the specific song title) the higher the song becomes ranked...It means absolutely nothing with regard to how good the song is or if the artist has any talent whatsoever...It's merely a counter of the number of clicks on the song...

I haven't checked in quite a while, but there was one guy who remained at #1 on the Classic Rock chart for at least 6 months straight that I know of. And it was an excruciatingly lame, badly performed and badly recorded song. It occurred to me that if someone wanted to manipulate the rankings it would be quite easy to do. My guess is that's exactly what this fellow was doing.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

ORIGINAL: bilbosblues what a dastardly business... you mean unethical Internet songsmiths... arrrrrr Not unethical and not dastardly...It's an ego driven thing...Some of our forum members thrive on how their songs are "rated" by sites such as Soundclick...The sad part (for the artist uploading the songs) is that the ratings don't equate quality time spent listening...One click (and you decide the song really sucks) adds to the higher "rating" in the "charts"...The listener (the one clicking on the track) doesn't have the option to say "this song really sucks"...Once you've clicked, it's a "vote" for the song's "popularity...It's nothing more than a number of "clicks" (I refuse to use the word "hits" in this instance) on the song...

Excerpt from Soundclick: The most important factor are the unique song streams (song plays by different users). If you also use the widgets to make our MP3 player available somewhere else (e.g. on a myspace page), we do count those plays as well, but only to a certain extent. Those plays are treated like anonymous plays on the SoundClick site. BTW, the numbers you see on your band statistics page are total plays. But for the charts we only count unique plays. Example: someone listens to your song 10 times in a row. On your band statistics you'll see all 10 plays, but for the charts only the first play is counted. The other plays are no longer 'unique' for that day.

There is the potential for cheating with sites like soundclick, you can connect to them in such a way that each listen is treated as a new person listening, it involves the use of anonymizing websites. That being said though, I had a track in the IDM top 30 for over a year, without resorting to cheating, it also hit no.1 at least three times during that period. Then again its probably the smallest sub-genre chart. I was quite pleased to hit 27 in the overall electronica chart. Also there are numerous ways to "blatantly self promote yourself" that will bring you enough listens to chart you high in the chart, and then when everyone comes along to see the chart they check out the top 10, keeping you there. Trust me it doesnt take a massive amount of listens to chart high in most of the sub-genres.
