OT:but about music also
i'm teaching myself core java (not to difficult of a task as i program in c and c++ ) from a book from the sun microsystems press java series and was wondering if someone could recommend both a freeware and a pay for web page developer. i programmed some html back 10 years ago by text editor nothing fancy. all of this has to do with the space tree project i developed a couple of years ago that envisioned using modified binary tree structures as a map/design for audio computational processing. which would allow user's of the web to participate by choosing nodes and downloading wav files to be associated with those nodes (the tree structures offer visual feedback and are somewhat visually appealing to some while not so much to others). the tree structures utilize node types (four types; rhythm, harmony, melody and harmolodia) and node gain, node degree (number of edges associated with a node, paths that connect one node to another) and edge gain all of which would control the morphing, delay, mixing/routing and transposition of the wav files. i thought that creating the samples in an exclusionary environment (the not listening to previous recordings thing) would breath life into the endeavor. so each participant could pick a node but be unable to listen to other samples or the project in it's entirety until it was completed. myself included. there are four compositions three of them have over 160+ different nodes. only three compositions have a tree structure as the fourth utilizes a method of developing itself from the other three. participants should not anticipate recognizing their individual efforts on the final project yet i can not say for sure this would not be possible. as the tree structures can be thought of as synthesizers that have fixed outputs but ones that are so complicated that it is not possible to envision the final output until all the nodes have their associated wav files and the process is turned on so to speak. this project is still a ways off from the start up. this is a free non-copyrighted project that if sold would only support a non-profit endowment for future web experimental electronic music projects. and could be freely sampled by anyone. participants could have their name listed with the project if they choose to. okay i have gone on way to long when all i wanted was some suggestions of html development packages if anyone is doing that sort of thing. but i thought at least a little background was in order. thanks in advance.

I use dreamweaver7. (8 looks nicer with more features) though my web design skills are very basic, i like it because it lets me build my site without programming html. but it also has a standard html editor. i tried adobes version...but it just confused me...to complicated. never liked adobe products... I dont know of any free ones....but I am pretty happy with dreamweaver. and Im sure it will work for what you want. I believe they have a demo version that lasts a couple of days to play around with.

there is html kit, which is free, but i agree with sean that dreamweaver does do a lot more in a very convenient package. there is a real learning curve (for me at least) using dreamweaver for more complex stuff like asp, but if i understand what you're proposing a) your programming skills are way beyond mine and b) there's nothing that's really going to make your task easy.

Coffee Cup has some nice and inexpensive programs to ease website development. Far less expensive than DreamWeaver but still a step above raw HTML coding. http://www.coffeecup.com/

I just bought dreamweaver..........the company is annoying to deal with. Even though the new version is out they are not giving me my upgrade till middle of october. I'm thinking of annoying them till they give it too me. I haven't got into the program yet because I don't have a fluid design for my new website. Fireworks is my favorite though. I know it lets you do java. Java sites seem hard to do SEO. Best of luck.

There used to be (some years ago now) a free or shareware one called Hotdog (I think). I'll do a google search..... Edit: http://www.sausage.com/products.html doesn't apperat to be free or shareware anymore. Used to have a good reputation though. Anyway, have a look.

If you wanted to program in .NET (without Visual Studio) you can use either Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition for ASP.NET 2.0, or ASP.NET Web Matrix for ASP.NET 1.1. Both are free. .NET would be well suited for your project, though I don't know how/if Java integrates well into .NET, or if .NET has much in the way of audio classes. Probably does, but at what quality, I wonder. .NET is its own world, though. Otherwise, Dreamweaver, CoffeeCup, GoLive (if you like the Mac methodology), Homesite (my fav), TopStyle, etc etc etc. Just stay away from FrontPage.
To think, at one time P5 was a $429 MSRP app. I think that technology and music has always been together, and I think music is science, anyway. - Vangelis The Other P5 Forum

the tree structures utilize node types (four types; rhythm, harmony, melody and harmolodia) and node gain, node degree (number of edges associated with a node, paths that connect one node to another) and edge gain all of which would control the morphing, delay, mixing/routing and transposition of the wav files. Here's hoping that you settle in on the right HTML editor for the project, Robert, but I didn't want the true genius of this thread to get passed over. When you get it worked out, please keep me in consideration as a "node".

sure thing b rock it was just an idea to experiment with some methods i had to employ outside of music and thought why not use this in making experimental music and then why not do it on the web. so i sat down one day and began to build 3 modified binary tree structures that visually represented to me the concept of each composition. then i added prime and fibonacci numbers because again they fit the underlying concept of the compositions (okay somewhat science/mythological concepts). prime and fibonacci numbers are really interesting in themselves as we keep finding prime numbers in our definitions of nature and fibonacci numbers keep rearing their head in our analysis of our own behavior and the behavior of the toys we create. some people like the binary tree structures aesthetically some find them disgusting (rorschach or something). would really like to eventually set up something to allow people to experiment with various concepts on the web through some type of endowment. not sure if anyone has used this method of experimental electronic music composition before so it seemed like a natural place to begin......

just wanted to thank everyone again for the suggestions and for the sake of not starting another OT: thread wanted to share some delight i have had from studying java. if you are anywhere close to my age group you have probably whether you have actually thought about it or not been solving problems all your life utilizing a procedural methodology. either top down or bottom up or a combination of the two. even if you managed to modularize some of the more complex problems you have encountered you probably have not utilized the method of problem solving that java is centered around OOP object oriented programming or problem solving. it is just a 'new' amazing way to look at a problem. probably older than the hills but ....well hardly new as a large portion of credit must be given to niklaus wirth the designer of pascal. yep sitting in starbucks at 5:30 am this morning well it is the only thing open in the holy city i had an epiphany of sorts centered around applying these OOP techniques to musical composition/construction. it has opened a whole new door for me just thinking about the possibilities. i urge everyone to look into this technique or method of problem solving that is OOP. on the other hand if you are young you may have no idea what procedural problem solving is and do all your problem solving in an object oriented way i urge you then to look into the procedural methods. the overall concept of each of these methodologies is so different and unique. life has so many threads yet they all are united through the essence of who we are and what we do. "you want to minimize the coupling between classes." hehe. :-) this is everything to me today i can't stop thinking about the ramifications of it all. and now a topic no one wishes to discuss human parasites "mr worm man can't you please take these worms out of me." lol. you get yer black walnut shell get yer wormwood get yer cloves mix em all about and you got everything you need to cure every ailment known to man and women. the fda has not determined that rabeach should be listened to when it comes to dispensing medical information. rabeach has determined that the fda is a sack of .......... :-)
