    Andy,
At first I was going to say you have to wait until after the next election; the Bush Administration doesn't actually allow free speech. Then I realized you wanted something that doesn't cost anything, you know, like an uneducated opinion. Now I'm guessing you want a VST plugin that synthesizes human speech and for which the price is no object as long as its free. Do you mean like a vocordor?

LOL well said--nope I have vocoders coming out my a**e (the nord modular one is awesome incidentally better than the V synth vocal card for straight vocoding)

What i am actually looking for is a kind of stephen hawkings/ windows speech thing with pitch changing over midi. the one I found is great but crashes sonar so i want one that doesnt.

If you dont think Bush allows free speech, wait until the chosen one is in command.

There's always the Microsoft "narrator" utility.

It'll read typed text in a robotic kind of voice. There's different voices you can get, but the "Steven Hawking" model is probably the most common. And you can control speed & pitch. It comes standard on XP, just search for it. I don't know if they still call it "narrator" in Vista though.

dunno about vst's.. but back in 84 this was all the rage

I have the c64 cart of it here also.. opps wrong thread..

there has been loads over the years apple had one with the mac (as used by radiohead) ... MS had a few. and the amiga had one also.

couldn't find any vst ones.. I guess it might be just a case of recording to wav and importing that way.

Ok cool, but how are you getting Sonar to let you record the windows narrator? I tried using a mic, but Sonar gives me the "unable to start audio engine" message while the narrator is running.

When I was 11 I had a Texas Instruments TI994/A computer. If we bought X number of catridges (yes they used cartridges for ROM storage and a cassette tape interface for RAM) we got a free "Speech Synthsizer" add-on module. So we got that.
So afterschool when I was in the 6th grade, my friends and I would type in obscene words into the computer just for laughs :)

you can do it without sonar loaded and just startup audacity and record what you hear.. as your sonar is probably in asio mode?

hey artsoul, have you tried this?
    AT&T Text-To-Speech online demo
I've used it a lot. The cool thing is you can get lots of different English accents (US, UK, Indian, German, French...)
hours of fun. I don't know if you can download it, but the online version works great.

It's the next best thing if you can't find an old Texas Instruments Speak'n'Spell
