OUT OF MEMORY error message.

I'm currently running 5 Studio.  Last night I was editing drums in a song and I could no longer play the song.  I tried changing buffer size and with no luck.  I tried to bounce to clip and got an "out of memory"  message (plenty of room on my harddrive).  I tried using help and it "failed to launch."  I then tried other songs with all the same messages.

I ended up rebooting a few times and I was able to get all the other songs working, but not the original song I was working on.  No matter what i try to do within that song Sonar shuts down.

Does anyone know what causes this?  Is it because I had a ton of edits?

Memory is not the same as hard drive. They are 2 completely different resources.

What version of Windows are you using and how much memory (not disk drive) is installed on that computer?

How many plug-ins are you using in that project? Does it have any plug-ins that are "freebies"?

Check the Windows Task Manager to see what other applications may be using memory.

I have 3.0 of RAM.  I'm running about 20 tracks on that one song.  10 of them are drums with hundreds of edits.  I'm running cakewalk's compressor on 6 drum tracks and cakewalk's delay on 2 guitar tracks.

I'm not much of a computer guy (obviously), but after finding another thread I see my problem could actually be my hard drive.  I'm more than 85% full and have never defragged.  I think I may need a larger drive.  Especially since I'm upgrading to 8.5 Producer this weekend.

that might be the problem (85% full hard drive).

oh - and you can't "upgrade" to sonar 8.5 any more.  if you find a store that has old stock they are still selling it won't be at upgrade price, but old stock might be discounted enough.  the current upgrade is for Sonar X1.

I ordered the upgrade from MF last weekend.  I think the price was $199!?!?  I'm trying to avoid x1 until they work out all the kinks.

Thanks Beagle and daveny5 for helping.

I worked it out.  I moved all my project files to an external hard drive and now have over 50% free space.  I then defragged.  At this point I was able to go in and "bounce-to-clip" one track at a time.  Now I'm able to work freely w/out Sonar shutting down.

This was a huge lesson learned...keep my music on an ext drive and bouce-to-clip more often.  This is good because I almost soiled my shorts.

Yes, that definitely could be a problem. Here's why: computers load the operating system and programs into memory because it has the fastest access time, but when they use up most of the memory, they start paging (moving) things from memory to virtual storage which is the disk drive. So if you have a large project and its using a lot of memory, the Windows paging file will increase in size and if you run out, it could result in the message you're getting.

You might also consider getting a program like Advanced SystemCare and/or CCleaner (both free and safe... Google them.) They will clean up some junk that builds up in your computer and keep things running smoother.
