Observation - VSTi Handling MUCH More Robust in latest SONAR
Just some Empirical evidence based on a single data point but I thought it was noteworthy. (It definitely is to me). I love an old synth - Big Tick Audio's Rhino. For years it would not play nice with SONAR. I would eventually make the mistake of trying to use it and it would inevitably crash hard and ugly, usually with my monitors screaming in pain as I rushed to find the power button on my DAW. This problem btw was not limited to SONAR, and postings on Big Tick's forum at KVR showed that other DAWs experienced similar problems with certain presets, while other DAWs, apparently did not have an issue. This is not a 32 bit issue - unless it relates to Big Tick's implementation of their 64 bit version which is the only version I have ever used.
I eventually found out that certain presets were guaranteed to cause the crash right away, but it didn't look like Big Tick was too interested in resolving the problem for a synth that was so long in the tooth, and which, while still for sale was often bargain discounted. So I set Rhino aside and moved on.
For whatever reason, I thought I would try it out again yesterday. I turned down my monitors, loaded Rhino, and pulled up a sure-fire-crash preset (Daniel Kemp's "Collenius Rhythm" from Azul Loops Vol 1 - and expected the worst. It didn't happen. I couldn't get Rhino/SONAR to crash no matter what I did.
I am not suggesting that Rhino will never crash again, or that other softsynths won't have a problem. My point is just that the hard work the Bakers have done to date improving the audio engine is paying huge dividends, here at least. Getting Rhino back is like getting a new synth.
Thank you Bakers.
