Moshkito Premiata Forneria Marconi -- PFM ... forget what it means since it has nothing to do with the band's work itself! How creative!
The name of a bakery. Literaly Rewarded Bakery Marconi - probably "Marconi's award winnining bakery" would be a better translation.

Although we are used to it since it is pop culture, Steely Dan is an odd bad name especially considering the origins.

I knew that part ... but for a band name, I thought it was kinda funny, specially in Europe, when yes, there were many local bakeries that got an award for this or that. Same thing used to happen in Brazil, in both Assis and Araraquara where we lived in the state of Sao Paulo. heck, you could smell it before it came out of the oven and you would be there to buy one loaf, before it even cooled down! Slap the butter on it, and karrrruunnnch right into it!
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Funnier yet, were the gadgets that used to be put out for many of the Steely Dan's albums. And one such pipe, of course was ... you know it ... and many guys looked at that pipe ... and would not take a toke off it ... and you should have seen the girls laugh their hearts out ... it was almost too funny!

In Phoenix during the 80's there was a hardcore punk band named "The Very Idea of F@#^*#@ Hitler". I went to see them one night at a gig they did with a few other bands. They were hilariously bad, but I think that was the point.

Back in the '80s there was a local band called TBA. When the monthly club schedules came out in the freebie newspapers (like the ones you pick up on the way out from GC), TBA was listed as playing in tons of clubs in 3 or 4 weeks!

I always thought "Free Beer" would be a good band name. The Marquee would read: Tonight Only - Free Beer! Of course after the crowd figured out that was only the name of the band, they may be more than a little upset.

I played in a band called "Sprawl." Aside from getting called "Spawn, Spoil," and a hundred other mixups, this was in the early 00's, before bands had heavy internet presence. Once we started getting attention, it was impossible to Google us. Everything that came up was about urban growth. I hope most bands today think about that...

bapu The Beatles. Bad spelling aside why call a group of humans a disgusting insect name?
In the UK, after skiffle and before "pop and rock", guitar bands were known as "Beat" groups, hence the Lennonesque wordplay. Before that of course, on their Scottish tour with Johhny Gentle in 1960 they were known as The Silver Beetles. Of course the whole Beetle / Beatle theme, originally put forward by Stu Sutcliffe, was their collective hat tip to Buddy Holly and The Crickets...

Thin Lizzy were originally called 'Tin Lizzie', and named after character in a comic book. They changed to 'Thin' because Dubliners pronounce it 'Tin'. HTH. Of course, I know what Craig meant.
