Of Mice and Men...and Sonar X1b
This might sound like I've gone completely off the rails BUT...is it possible for Sonar to screw up (or screw with) your wireless USB mouse? I've tried a couple and they work fine outside of Sonar but frequently "lose focus" inside Sonar. The cursor will start moving very slowly and not responding well to mouse movements. I can usually just take the mouse and hold it down next to the front of my computer (that's where I have the tiny little USB antenna thingy plugged in) and it will get it's focus back. But might lose it again at any time. Irritating. Again, they tend to operate OK outside of Sonar. Is this even possible?? I bought a new microsoft mouse over the weekend and found that if it was plugged in my computer wouldn't even boot up. I could plug it in AFTER boot up and it would work fine. But if I shut down, I could not reboot as long as it was attached. I googled around and found that this is actually common. Imagine that? Hence my crazy question regarding Sonar. Your thoughts?

Olpal, I've been using a wireless USB Microsoft mouse and keyboard for the last 18 months with no problems. It works well for both X1b and 8.5.3. I have found that it goes through AA batteries in no time, and when it does it becomes unresponsive. I now use rechargeable batteries which tend to last longer and save money. I'm no expert, but I seriously doubt that Sonar messes with your mouse.

+1 Regarding the batteries but I have also noticed something else with the wireless mouse that I use and that is interference from other electronic gear or cables that run near the mouse antenna. My external hard drive was causing major problems when placed near the mouse antenna, my cursor was jumping all over the place randomly and seemed to move really slowly when I did get some control of it. Also check that the antenna is separated from power cables (or any cables) behind the PC. This may or may not solve your problem but its certainly worth investigating.

I continue to have problems with the mouse losing focus in Console View. Mind you it only seems to be in console view. I click on a track and it won't select if the track is below or to the left of the current mouse position. I have to click any track to the right of the current mouse position first, and then it works again. I thought it might be related to the cordless mouse but any mouse has the same issues. Of course this weirdness comes and goes at will so I've never tracked it down. The current workaround is Gin & Tonic in a tall glass, lots of ice.

How close is your mouse to the antenna and are they on the same plane? (Both on desk top for example) If it has a reset or channel button have you tried pushing that again? If not first press the button on the antenna and then the button on the bottom of the mouse. Sometimes selecting a different channel will solve the problem.

I went back to corded mice after battling multiple models' idiosyncrasies for years. They ate batteries too fast, so I got a rechargeable one. That battery failed after a few months, as did its replacement. I'm hard on mice (hours of zapping aliens) so I have to replace them often, but now it's a $10 purchase instead of a $100 replacement. In the most recent case, it turned out to be interference with a cordless telephone that was causing my mouse to go bonkers. It was especially frustrating when my mouse got a mind of its own whenever I was on the phone with a customer! What you might experiment with is getting a short USB extension cable so that you can move the receiver closer to the mouse. Not only will that make it less prone to interference, it will also extend the practical life of the batteries, giving you an extra day of use before the signal gets too weak to reliably move the cursor.

But it plugs into a USB port, no? So you get a USB extender cable, plug that little nub into the end of it, and tape it down to your desk.

I don't have any problems with the Logitech G7. Rechargeable battery in the docking station so it never runs out. The battery life starts out great, but is down to about once a day now, but since the backup recharges while you're using the mouse, it's a non-issue to me.

OlPal, I've had similar troubles with my wireless mouse. I believe in wireless all the way, but I found that if I put an extension cable on the mini receiver (or any of the wireless receivers of my mice with Sonar) and get it closer to the mouse, then it works so much better. Unsightly, yes, but functional it is. I've had this problem intermittantly over the years. This works best for me. I feel your pain... Cheers

Did you reset it? There's a button on the receiver you press and then press the button on the mouse and they should sync up and work fine.

I've been using wireless keyboard/mice setups for years now and find that the little box antenna needs to be near the mouse. I can sit 20 feet across the room with the keyboard on my lap but the mouse has to be relatively close to the antenna. I have a pullout shelf from under my workstation and have the antenna taped to the back of that behind the keyboard and mouse mat. I've never experienced any glitching but I'm also careful not to bring a cordless phone into my control room and I'm pretty anal when it comes to studio cabling. Fresh batteries are a must. I replace my rechargeables each month whether or not it's necessary. Another thing to check is the power saving scheme of your various USB buses to make sure that a particular port that your mouse is connected to isn't going to sleep or reduced power availability. You can check this in your power plans: Change Plan setting/Change Advanced Power Settings or in your Device Manager under USB Controllers/USB Root Hubs & USB Generic Hubs.

Perhaps something is conflicting? Check the device manager to verify. If freeing up a USB port is on your wish list, and your system supports it, I use (and would recommend trying) a bluetooth mouse - In my case it was pretty much required. I just wish there were more options for actual models. Good luck

Hey yorolpal, In 8.5 with a wired mouse I had times when Sonar windows / frames / VST's would loose focus too. It's like certain windows / frames of Sonar would receive a "always on top" message and no amount of clicking on the other windows would fix it. (and no, it's not bit bridge - don't use it). I too thought it was a mouse issue and messed about with setting / drivers etc until I worked out that clicking on the desktop a few times would sort things out... well at least until it happens again. Sonar was the only app in which this old behavior would occur. In my time trying to find repeatable steps I narrowed it down to having floating window on the secondary screen (dual screen setup) and holding the mouse button down for a while (like adjusting pan / send / etc) whilst project is in playback. Even then it was random. Just thought I'd chime in and say: "Don't ever question your sanity when using Sonar - ever!"

You guys may think me completely off my rocker but I have been getting a lot of hemorrhoids just after I have been working with VSTi's in Sonar. They are particularly nasty if I have been using Dimension Pro. Any of you had a similar problem with Sonar and Vsti's causing hemorrhoids? Thanks in advance...I will be in the bathroom waiting for some input.... This thread marks the exact moment that this forum has finally jumped the shark. I have now heard it all. thanks for this thread it has been most enlightening.

Just a thought Olpal, are you using WizMouse? If so, when you changed to the new mouse your WizMouse utility may still be trying to use your old mouse, which of course is not there. You may have to uninstall it and then reinstall so it configures to the new mouse. If you don't have it or use it just consider this as mindless babble that you just thought you heard in a dream.
