Off Topic "computer problems question"
Hi, I have a problem, there was a power outage at my complex, my wall has 3 prong outlets but apparently its the old style wiring and it isnt grounded which made my surge protector worthless or shall I say not work. The problem is this has happened 3 times in the past. my computer starts up,stays on the compaq screen for at least 8-9 minutes then takes another 1-2 minutes for windows to load. last time it happened I did a bunch of things/startuptests/defrag and eventually it started to boot up normal. It would go to the compaq screen for a second then bam start windows and be ready to play ball in about 2 minutes. My problem is I dont know what I did to make it work right the last 3 times this happened. I did things in safe mode, spyware stuff startup repair. all kinds of things. anyhow, does anyone know basically what happened and what exactly I need to do to get it running normal again? at least a starting point? such an inconvenience, I very happy it loads though even though it takes 10 minutes everytime I turn the power on or even evertime I restart. I know some of you guys know more about computers than I do. probably most of you. Any answers are appreciated and I would be so grateful. take care, Kevin

First...get a good UPS (uninterruptable power supply....with batteries to keep you running), that will stop the power issues.... it also sounds like you need a good registry cleaner.... a good free one is CCleaner. It cleans up the registry and all the other stuff that collects in the startup area. Keep a good virus protection plan running....also a firewall...... and defrag it from time to time.

sounds like a major hard drive crash - sounds like your MBR is corrupt and you probably have bad sectors maybe even corrupting the table.

Run: chksdk /f /r from the command line, that should fix most of the problems.

Wish I knew what to tell you.... it sounds like Greek to me too. At this point I would (personally) be looking at buying a new hard drive and starting from scratch with a fresh drive and a new install of everything...... but that's just me.... Last time I noticed my drive starting to act a bit flakey, I bought a new drive and cloned it before it died on me...... but I understand that a crash just kinda reaches out and grabs ya...... when you least expect it, and, might I add, at the most inopportune moment.

go to windows explorer right click on C: drive (assuming that's the drive you have problems with) choose properties>tools then click on the CHECK NOW for ERROR CHECKING check BOTH check boxes then click OK it will tell you that it can't do it while windows is running and ask if you want to schedule it at the next boot up. say YES then restart the machine. it will probably take a long time to finish.

Try what Beagle is suggesting if it does not work rebooting your computer, then try to reboot in safe mode with command prompt then you type chksdk /f

Hi Kevin, I had my husband take a look at your posts and he said to follow the instructions in this link Fix Master Boot Record. He says you have to get to recovery console and then type: fixmbr Hope it works. Annette

good deal! I would advise starting to think about getting a replacement hard drive, tho and definitely get your data from it backed up ASAP!

defiantely good deal, how do I go about backing up my data? do I buy an external harddrive and somehow transfer the data? also Is there a way to save all my cakewalk music projects to a cd or dvd disc. If so ho do I do this, I tried burning to a data disc and when I opened it it had different tracks for each song. I would want to be able to throw the disc in and open up the whole project so I could save it to a new computer if I had to and continue working on it., thanks Reece

If you have a second hard drive or external drive you may use an active backup system so your files will be safe and upto dateall the time. This utility may help http://www.ajcsoft.com/index.php

ok, Computer was doing realy good for a week straight. I decided to buy a new powerstrip w/surge protection to protect this from happening again. I turned off the old powerstrip and unplugged it and plugged everything into the new strip. turned it on and back to how it was. I start it, It satys on the compact screen for several minutes then the widows screen for a few minutes and them ok to use. takes about 10-11 minutes for computer to load and work normal. I tried most of the things on this page and the things I tried last time but this time nothing is working. the weird thing is once the computer loads, I cant even tell its having problems. It runs normal, actually a little faster since I defragged. the main thing is this stupid 10 minute startup time. Its weird cuz this happened a time in the past after I unplugged the computer too.

is it downloading any service pack from MS? after you login try the Disk Clean up utility from the accessories-sytem tools menu, I bet you have a lot currupt and temp files laying around and probably some bad sectors in the hard drive. Also run windows update to download all your updates at onces insted of downloading them in the background. To flag/repair bad sectors use chkdsk /r
