Re: Off to the Islands

Update at the end of week 2. It seems every time I come here I cannot leave without having sustained at least one bodily injury. Every year, without exception. And it's usually something unusual. Some may recall how last year I was literally being eaten by fire ants in my sleep. This time, though, I really thought I'd broken the curse, given my improved tropical survival skills so hard-won by experience. Oh, but no. Yesterday we went to The Beach. Not our own rocky beach, but the nice one on the other side of the island with powdered white sand and ice cream vendors on bicycles. I was looking forward to a nice swim, the first with my recently-repaired spine. It started out fine. Better than fine, it was absolutely wonderful, right up to the point of incapacitation. As I strolled back toward the beach to dry off and have some lunch, an enormous pulse of pain shot up from my right foot that sent me crashing into the surf. I thought I'd stepped on a rock, although there were no rocks in sight anywhere on that perfectly smooth white sand. I fell down a few more times before eventually making my way back to the little rented hut on the shore, where Dr. Wife performed an inspection. My first thought was a stingray. These beautiful, docile creatures hide in the sand and you really don't want to step on one. You may recall that it was a stingray that killed naturalist Steve Irwin, although that was a freak accident. Normally, stingrays scoot off in a hurry when you approach them. It wasn't a stingray. It was something even more innocuous - a sea urchin. At least, I thought they were innocuous. But those little buggars are covered in barbed spines like a porcupine's quills. They can be safely picked up if you're gentle. But jeesh, don't ever step on one! The bottom of my foot had a dozen tiny spines embedded in it. When we got home, Dr. Wife performed field surgery on me with a needle, tweezers and peroxide. Ouch, ouch, ouch. How many more? Just one big one, she said. It was planted right in the arch of my foot, the most sensitive zone. My screams were drawing a crowd of children, fascinated that this big white guy could be such a wuss. Fortunately, I had added some of the painkillers left over from my back surgery to the first-aid kit. After popping a couple Percosets, I was able to endure the removal of the final quill. High as a frickin' kite, actually. She could have cut off my whole foot and I would have just asked for more ice cream. Now, these little spines are designed by nature to inflict maximum pain. Not only are they barbed, making them difficult to extract, they break off when you attempt it. Bottom line is a fragment of one of them remains in my foot, and will likely require a real doctor for removal. I'm looking forward to the check-in at the doctor's office, where the bored receptionist, staring at her computer, starts with "was this a work-related injury?". I bet I can make her look up from the computer for a second.

Shouldn't laugh really, but I did right there ! Sounds painful. :( I think the basic problem is that humans do not belong in the sea and now and again the inhabitants like to remind us of that. In fairness, is there was a shark in your swimming pool, you'd probably do something about having it removed.

I don't have a pool, so that won't be a problem. I do, however, have a hot tub. Frogs live in it. I've been tempted to fill it with water and test the boiling-frog theory, but I can't afford the electricity.

Excellent idea, Rim. Unfortunately, epsom salts appear to be the one thing I forgot to throw into the 1st aid kit. There is a drugstore in town that might carry it, though. In the meantime I'm thinking that the South China Sea is pretty salty. Maybe another swim might at least sterilize the wounds. Anyone notice how jet lag becomes an ever-greater hurdle the older you get? Just the 3-hour differential going to the east coast requires copious amounts of alternating coffee and prune juice to cope. My present location is a whopping 16-hour time shift from PST. Makes you feel like you're on another planet, not just another continent. I got up at 1:00 AM today, thinking it felt like morning, which I suppose technically it was. I want to know how those guys working call centers in India manage it, since they have to work inverted hours to service the U.S. I'll have to ask "Kevin" from "Texas", who answers the phone when I call my bank. Actually, these wacky hours aren't all that bad. At 1:00 AM it's cool here, in the upper 60's. As I type this I'm sitting outside in shorts and sandals while being serenaded by crickets. And at this hour those incessant chickens have finally shut up. Chickens are the ubiquitous background ambiance of the Philippines, city or country. If I ever get to build my studio here, a primary design requirement will be 80 dB transmission loss at chicken frequencies. Alas, today begins my last week in paradise. On Friday night we'll begin the long trek homeward, starting with an 8-hour overnight drive to Manila. Talk about yer jetlag...we leave Manila on Saturday morning and arrive in Seattle an hour earlier on the same day. Hope there's no snow.

This is why I don't go in the sea. The thought of standing on something like that...or worse, one of those stone fish thingies...ugh. Flashback to 1988, in Corfu...I ventured out into a rough sea on an inflatable bed thinking it would be fun. A huge wave crashed over me as I lay on my back, and slopped a great big jellyfish right on my stomach. It was terrifying, disgusting and painful as hell. I screamed like a little girl, in front of little girls. Nope!

bitflipper I'm off to my little island this morning for three weeks of R&R&R&R (rest, relaxation, reading and rejuvenation). Today'll be a day of excruciating tedium, but in 30 hours I'll be having a fresh papaya for breakfast, picked straight from the tree. Expected early-morning temperature there will be in the low-70's (~23C), highs around 90 and no rain (or snow!) in the forecast. As I write this it's 19 degrees (-7C) outside and 37 degrees (3C) here in the studio. We really didn't think we'd be able to go this year given our financial circumstances, but incredibly my wife hit a jackpot on a penny slot machine that paid almost exactly the amount we needed for airfare. Normally, I'd complain that I never have that kind of luck, but this year I found out that I can be lucky, too. People I've never met offered to buy me some plugins! And it didn't stop there. I was also offered a free audio interface, and a tc Powercore! Many others simply PM'd me to say thanks for contributing to the forum and helping them out in the past. My wife's jackpot pales in comparison to mine. If all that wasn't enough to raise my spirits, all I have to do is think back to where I was a year ago. I wasn't in this financial jam (yet) but I was in unrelenting pain, barely able to walk and popping narcotics like they were M&Ms. Today I can walk again, I'm free of pain, 30 pounds lighter and physically stronger than I've been in 20 years. My hair has not come back, but other parts of me I'd long written off are functioning once again. So here I sit with the essentials packed into my carry-on: passport, laptop, MP3 player, books, sunglasses, sunscreen and headphones. I'll send you all a virtual postcard! Cheers and thanks to all, Dave
I can only guess at what you went through, but that's a really heart-warming story, Dave. I'm happy for you that things have turned around. Have a great, relaxing time on your island; 'see' you when you get back, buddy.

Craig, I checked the TOC on Amazon - no mention of sea urchins. Apparently not a problem in Florida. Then again, I may be the first tourist ever to manage a sea urchin injury. Jellyfish, however, do show up here from time to time. One year my daughter's hat blew off, right into the biggest swarm of jellyfish I've ever seen. I told her to write it off, hats were cheap in town, but she waded right in and retrieved her hat without being stung. Brave girl. I, OTOH, have been stung many times - by hat and t-shirt vendors in town who take advantage of tourists who tend to compare local prices to Wal-Mart prices back home and think 12 bucks is an excellent price for a $3 t-shirt.

I still have PTSD (Post Traumatic Sting Disorder)* from jellyfish I used to encounter at the beach at Port Aransas, TX. I can't begin to explain how badly those things hurt. I used to wish for a shark attack, just to make the pain stop. I contemplated tearing out my own nerves, setting them on fire and then soaking the charred remains in battery acid in order to make them feel better. *(Oddly enough, that's not the name of a Police song, but I think it should be...)

bitflipper Woohoo! Made it to the island. Worst trip ever. Instead of landing at midnight like usual, we started the car portion of the journey in the middle of rush hour. Forget any rush hour experiences, even in LA or Seattle - nothing's like rush hour in Manila. Sorry to hear it was hell getting there and then dealing with 200,000 jeepneys and motorbikes....all in front of YOU. :) That's some hi-impedence travel experiences. I was in Alongapo in February '66. Spent a couple of days on Mindoro (San Jose beachhead) in prep for my SE Asian picnic. Have a great trip.....

DAMMIT, Dave... Sorry you got urched.. I got one urchin spine in my knee in 20 years of diving, and they do hurt. The spines tend to break off under the skin, and as you well know by now, are very brittle and hard to remove. The spines may dissolve from the natural pH in our bodies,(mine did). I'm not sure how long it took, that was years ago, but no more than a week or two IIRC. Mine bothered me for several days, but I didn't have to walk on it. I hope that you have a quick recovery. Tony

This is a great idea. If we could all perfect that move from The Matrix (jump up and just hang there) and stay up for long enough, the world would roll by and when we came down, we'd all be someplace else. Mind you, it would be a bit of a trick to get back home. OTOH, if we were having enough fun, maybe we wouldn't want to.

Excellent idea. It should be a randomly-selected destination, though. Otherwise everybody would show up in Las Vegas like they do now. More exciting if there's a chance of popping up in, say, Karachi wearing a t-shirt that says "Women Rule!". My acceptance speech would thank Electricity and Claude Shannon. (Claude's the guy who came up with idea of combining electricity with binary logic. And on an idle weekend also provided the proof for Mr. Nyquist's little theory.)

Hey... There's an interesting idea for a book: "During a UFO sighting, suddenly everyone was instantly transported from where they were to a random location, trading places with whoever used to be in that location." I wonder how long it would take for everyone to get back to where they belonged? I wonder how many wouldn't want to go back...

Last day on the island. Bummer. I'd really have no problem staying here. Except for the vicious wildlife, sometimes being too hot, bone-jarring unpaved roads, lack of Mexican food and 3 kb/sec internet speed, it'd be a perfect place to live. Tonight we begin the long journey home. 8 hours' drive to (and, ugh, through) Manila, 3 hours in line at the airport, multiple layers of security that make the TSA look like slackers, 4 hours to Tokyo, more security, a quick (hopefully!) layover and then 10 hours to Seattle. More long lines for customs & immigration, dog-sniffing and explaining why I have 400 cigars in my bag. If there are no accidents or construction on I-5 (dream on), only 45 minutes more to home. Then a long hot shower to shake off the chill, and if there is an ounce of energy left in my body, lunch buffet at the Indian restaurant. Or a taco, if we see a taco truck first. Then we start figuring out how we're going to pay for next year's trip. I'm guessing a visit to the Indian casino will be involved.

I am home again. Totally exhausted. After our disastrous outbound journey 3 weeks ago, I figured the natural balance of the universe dictated that the return trip would go smoothly. I reckoned that at least it wouldn't be - couldn't possibly be - any worse. It goes to show that when you're an optimist and have a healthy positive attitude, the universe can be counted on to mercilessly slap you down one more time. Our problems began on Friday, which would be Thursday in the U.S., when our ride showed up and couldn't get the car restarted. Dead battery. We only had a couple hours' wiggle room to make the flight. I asked the driver: did the headlights dim while you were driving here? Language barrier. He didn't understand my question. They stole a battery from our jeepney, the car started right up and everybody's smiling. I'm trying to say - do you know it's not the alternator? Nobody's hearing me. I said: if it's the alternator it means instead of being stranded here at home we'll make it 2 hours down the road only to find ourselves stranded by the side of the road. Nobody's listening. He's a professional driver, my wife said. Smiles all around as we pull away, only a little behind schedule. 2 hours down the road, the headlights go out. Now we're stuck by the side of the road at 1:00 AM out in the middle of frickin' nowhere. We've got no food or water. The optimist in me says well, this is the pits but at least it can't get any worse. Then it got worse. We decided to keep driving, find a gas station and get the batteries recharged. Sounds like a terrible idea but we're determined to make our flight and time's running out. So we begin driving. It's pitch dark on a rural highway that's dangerous even in daylight. We've got two flashlights illuminating the stripes on the road and hopefully warning away oncoming traffic. Not those hefty flashlights a truck driver keeps under the seat, but those tiny AAA-powered flashlights you keep in your laptop case. We can barely see 10 feet in front of us. At this point it dawns on me that the trip has crossed a line, going from annoying to very real mortal danger. I tried to appreciate the surreal quality of it all, slowly rolling down the highway holding a flashlight out the passenger-side window. My wife's in the back shining her flashlight backward to warn cars approaching from behind. An hour of excruciating tension goes by, during which we pass two gas stations. The first does not have a charger, the second is closed for the night. Not many all-night gas stations out in the country at 2:00 AM. It would seem our luck can't get any worse, but it does. The engine dies and we roll silently to the side of the road. Our driver advises that I remain in the car and not show myself, as there have been reports of highway bandits along this stretch of road. I am getting thirsty and it's hot. After a while a tricycle comes by (motorcycle with a sidecar). We try to flag him down but he roars past. I didn't blame him, I wouldn't have stopped either - we could be bandits. Two more tricycles pass, the third stops and agrees to give our driver a lift to the nearest town, where presumably he can get the battery charged. I forgot to tell him to look for some water. Two hours later, our driver returns with a charged battery. Puts it in, the car starts, everybody rejoices. We can still make our flight! But I am thinking to myself: it'll die again in 2 hours, we're 3 hours from Manila and 4 hours from sunrise. I am, however, doing the math silently so as not to add to anyone else's anxiety. Sure enough, 2 hours later the battery's dead and we're once again driving down a pitch-black country road with flashlights. We find a mechanic in the next town. Of course, the mechanic is asleep. It's 3:30 AM. We roll to the side of the road in front of the mechanic shop and wait. Fortunately, his 3 dogs chained up next to us bark loudly and eventually lights come on. Mr. Mechanic comes out and verifies: your battery's dead because your alternator's shot. Duh. But he's got a charger. By the time the battery's charged the sun has begun to rise and there is no possibility of making it to the airport in time. But at least we will get there. My inner optimist wakes back up and says "we can get on a later flight." I'm gonna just slap that inner optimist next time and say "shut the f*ck up". We get to Manila during rush hour. You have to experience rush hour in Manila to understand just how ugly traffic can really be. You imagine you'll spend the rest of your life trapped there, a life that at least will be cut mercifully short by exhaust fumes so thick it's like a fog. A brown, hot fog. We finally arrive at the airport 4 hours after the plane has left. I look for the Delta ticket counter. There is none. No sign, nothing to indicate Delta even has a presence in Manila. A security guard tells me there's an office upstairs. Two security checkpoints and a pat-down to get there, I wander through a maze of back hallways and finally find a locked door with a hand-made sign taped to the door that says "Delta". And an 800 number in the U.S. I turn on my cellphone, roaming charges be damned, and text my business partner back in Seattle: Help! He gets Delta on the phone, texts me back that there is only one flight per day, the one we missed. Now, I know these flights are always 100% full and you have to book 2 months in advance to assure a seat. I'm picturing a week or more stuck in Manila with only enough funds left in our pockets for street food. If we get seats they'll be center-seats, not together, and probably on different days for my wife and I. Driving in the dark with flashlights no longer seems like the low point of the journey. Another text comes in: he can get us on the next flight the following morning, but we'll have to pay $2,300. We are being held ransom by Delta Airlines. I am getting steamed, thinking how when they cancelled our connecting flight out of Tokyo they felt no need to even apologize, but when the mistake is mine they want ransom to bail me out. Oh, and my visa has expired so technically I am now an illegal alien. My partner is a resourceful guy. He's the one who does most of the travelling in our little company. After awhile there's another text: he can get us both on a flight and they've agreed to reduce the ransom to $700. My hero. I text back: thanks, dude, I really owe you one! So the happy ending is we spent the night in a cheap motel near the airport, had a hot shower and noodles, got out the next morning. No window seat, and we had to fly to Portland, Oregon instead of Seattle, then take the Portland-Seattle shuttle. But we did finally make it home. A welcome hot shower and some spaghetti from the freezer and now here I sit, freezing and utterly depleted but happy. UPDATE: Started sorting the last 3 weeks' worth of mail and found a letter of apology from Delta for stranding us in Tokyo. They've credited 10,000 miles to our frequent-flyer accounts. It's something. I'd also like to reiterate that although I was angry with Delta management and swore never to fly them again, their ground staff went out of their way to try and help us. They scrounged up whatever snacks they could find and passed out blankets. Most of them had been roused from sleep at home to come in to work very early in the morning. Nothing but respect for the Japanese employees of Delta Airlines.

Wow... I do believe you've just confirmed why I travel so seldom Dave! Good to hear you actually made it back (instead of being stuck in some foreign prison or the Los Angeles DMV for example). Don't worry, I'm sure Seattle saved some mist for ya!
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

A big welcome back Dave. Glad you had a good time in between the traveling. Think on the positive side, if nothing had gone wrong your holiday would have been boring...
