Okay, before I do something stupid....PROBLEM SOLVED--THANKS!!

...I'd like to get some guidance from those more knowledgeable than I.  I have X1 up and running great.  Except that I tried my first audio recording and something is very wrong.  I have 2 conditions that I cannot explain:

1.  The input signal is badly distorted.  My signal path is:  instrument, ART tube preamp, M-audio USB interface.  I bypassed the preamp and still get the distortion, so I know the problem is not there.  I used different cords to be sure the problem is not there.

2.  The recoded clip (distorted exactly as input) plays back faster than recorded.  for example:  I record a 10 second clip, and it plays back faster, and therefore is shorter in duration, about 8 seconds.  I have never encountered this before.

Let me say that I am not a computer guy.  All I know about hardware is how to turn it on.  All I know about software is how to use it to do what I want it to do.  So, for example, if you suggest I disable my computer's onboard soundcard, you may as well suggest I do some stemcell research.  However, I can follow instructions pretty well.

Before I start doing things (oh, god!), what do you suggest?

Thanks...

Check you sample rates match SONAR and your interface.

Sounds like (no pun in ten did) you have a mismatch.

    1.  Are you putting your instrument through the DI into the M-audio?  If it is going through the preamp/line (assuming it is a guitar or other instrument level device) there will be all sorts of matching problems.

    2.  Sounds like a mismatch in sample rates between SONar and the interface.  That shouldn't happen, but ....

Open the software page for the M-audio.  Make sure of the sample rate there.  Open Options>Audio in SONAR and low, go through the many pages there and make sure eveything is the same rate.  Close everything down and re-open, making sure the settings have stuck.  I just got the stems from a protools project.  We had recorded another guitar to a mix the studio sent.  I loaded in the stems to do a mix and they had been recorded at 48 instead of 44.1.  Sonar converted them all when I tried to dump them, and the timing was off, of course.  Had to redo the extra guitars.  That is a different situation, but you don't have any already recorded tracks, do you?  Anyway, that is the first thing I'd do, and checking any already recorded tracks next.

Now, begin that stem cell research.  ;-)
