Okay, something I've never understood from Sonar 7 up to X1.

Alright. I'm honestly embarrassed that I didn't ask about this a long time ago. But here's the deal.

When it's time to do the final mixdown into that single stereo track, I've always had issues with Sonar. Sometimes I'll have nothing selected and it will render everything. Sometimes I'll have nothing selected and it will refuse to begin to render, asking me to select tracks.

Now, double-clicking one track/folder tab LOOKS like it selects everything, but Sonar almost always misses a track, folder, or clip.

So, ALL this time, I've had to go in and select every track, one by one, watching to make sure all clips turn black with each click. In a giant project this is tedious and obviously unnecessary. I assume I've been missing something or doing something wrong.

So, is there a sure-fire, quick and easy, "bounce all" that I've been missing this whole time?

From my experience, you must either have all, or none, of the tracks selected. If you have any individual tracks selected, it'll only do that track. And if that one selected track is an "audio" track component of a soft-synth folder, it won't have any data anyway, so nothing will export. Hope that helps.

Oh...and the other thing that always catches me out! Make sure that you don't have tracks solo'd - if you do, that is all that will export.

Similarly, if you have any tracks muted, they will NOT export.

    1. Edit
    2. Select all

    THEN DO YOU'RE EXPORT

you'll never miss selecting a track again

I too have had the same issues...curious I wondered if it was me or Sonar?

    Is this intentional? I wonder?

I get the work around ...but it would seem by my export choices it would know exactly what I wanted.

Just 'kickin' a dead horse' I guess.

    My neverfail method is:
1-Mute the tracks I don't want in the mix
2-CTRL-A to select all the tracks and clips
    3-File-Export-Audio.

    Works everytime.

I've never had problems like the described ones.

In addition to what's been said: Note that clicking the track only selects the clip. You must click the track number to select the track.

I always click in any empty space in the track view and then export. As soon as nothing is selected all tracks will export.

That method has never failed for me.

In the File->export->audio dialog, you would set up the bounce settings at the bottom of the dialog:

"Source category" set to "Entire Mix" or "Buses"
If you picked "entire mix" then "Source Buses/Tracks" should be set to the hardware driver selected as your monitor out.
If you picked "buses", then select which ever bus you send the final mix into.

If you set "Source category" to "Tracks", then you would only see the selected tracks, which is not what you may want.

Items under "mix enables" to have sonar process/not process things like track mutes etc.

If you for example, want to export everying, including mute/solo tracks, *uncheck* the 'track must/solo" under "mix enables" to have Sonar ignore the tack solo/mute settings during mix down.

So you don't have to go and select tracks clips, etc. Just set up the export dialog. :)

I usually have one master bus in my projects that everything feeds into. My master is set to output to my monitors. This way I can select my master bus as the source for the audio export, and not worry about pre-selecting clips and tracks.

By the time I'm exporting my 2-track master, any tracks I don't want in the mix aren't on the screen - they're hidden with the Track Manager, so there's no hassles of having the wrong tracks included.  No hassling with de-selecting some tracks.  Also, all MIDI tracks have already been bounced to audio so I know for positive what things will sound like in the final mix.  There's no way I would trust un-bounced MIDI tracks to be just the way I want them - Plus, there's a ton of audio editing and mixing I want to do with those synth tracks rather than leaving them raw.

I sweep through the time line from right to left, starting at a point where I know the reverb tails are out.  Then I double click the header of any track so all tracks are "highlighted" (black).  I've never had a mix not have exactly what I intended in it.

--Something not mentioned on this thread is making sure the time line is chosen correctly.  If you just select all, you're likely to have some reverb tails chopped off, since that makes the selection at the literal end of clips.  And if you trust the project to end where you want, it very well may not--the Forum is littered with posts from people asking why there's 10 minutes of silence at the end of their exports.  It's best to make your own selection in the time line, and that's easy when starting at the safe area after the tails are out, and then sweeping left to the top, as described.

This has always driven me nuts. One thing that that I do is use the selection tool bar to set a specific end point that will include any trails and nothing else. I've had some problems where do to certain soft synth issue, Sonar believe there was like 20 hours of audio after the end point.

I didn't know what was happening until I realized that sonar filled hours of whitespace at the end.
So for this reason I always set a manual end point :)

    Here's a quick tip too...

If your synths produce "trailing" effects after final note release, the render may not pick up the whole thing! To avoid this you can place a velocity 0 note a measure or two past the end of the song. You can do it other ways too, but this is my preferred way, since the song is "done" until that note is rendered, and will continue to play until then.

On 8.5.3 I ran into a few (quite a few) times when a mix would be missing a particular instrument and I'd have to re-bounce the mix, even with CTRL-A etc. I have note yet seen that with X1, but I still check the entire stereo file out of paranoia.

    Shawn,

That issue may be exclusive to your experience.  There are many occasions when I use multiple instrument plugs and FX and do not freeze any of them.  Some instruments are problematic when not doing a real-time bounce, but I have yet to experience an effect or instrument that does not make it into the mix at all.

For the record, I would suggest designing a routine, then sticking to it religiously.  Here's mine for final mix:

    1.  Make sure there are no tracks soloed or muted.  If you need to mute a track, archive it.  If the bottom of screen does not say Mute or Solo, that is one less thing that can go wrong.

    2.  Create two markers, one called Song Start and the other Song End.  Place them at the appropriate spots in the tune.  Ensure that there is space for any effects trails at the end of the song.

    3.  Press CTRL-A

    4.  Drop down Markers and select Song Start, click on Set From = Now

    5.  Drop down Markers and select Song End, click on Set Thru = Now

THE SELECTED AREA IS WHAT WILL BE EXPORTED.

    6.  Do the Export steps required.

If you have ever had a client look at you sideways because his "Final Master" did not include the guitar solo (and assuming you want to stay in business), you will arrive at a method and use it every time.
