Old Irish Song - "Trasna na dTonnta" - YOUTUBE VIDEO OUT NOW!!!!
An old folk classic taught in primary school, brings back memories. Translating to "Across the waves", here it is in our own celtic language of Gaeilge, the song "Trasna na dTonnta" . I have just completed the video of this today, which takes in footage of local fishermen working off the south-east coast of Ireland. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAM_Made2wM Cian Curfá:Trasna na dtonnta, dul siar, dul siar,Slán leis an uaigneas ‘is slán leis an gcian;Geal é mo chroí, agus geal í an ghrian,Geal a bheith ag filleadh go hÉirinn!Chonaic mo dhóthain de Thíortha i gcéin, Ór agus airgead, saibhreas an tsaoil, Éiríonn an croí ‘nam le breacadh gach lae ‘S mé druidim le dúthaigh mo mhuintir! CurfáMuintir an Iarthair ‘siad cairde mo chroí, Fáilte ‘is féile bheidh romham ar gach taobh. Ar fhágaint an tsaoil seo, sé ghuidhim ar an Rí Gur leosan a shinfear i gcill mé. Curfá

What a beautiful melody! Can't wait to read the lyrics - please post. Love the arrangement. You have some frequency buildup in the 300-400hz range. Maybe filter out some so that the overall level and presence can come up a notch. Look at the bass and drums for that. Could use a push at 60hz as well. That could make the low drum produce more punch. Lovely song.

Hi Cian, I enjoyed listening to Trasna Na dTonnta. Your strong vocal style really suits this song. If I was to add anything to this, then it would be in the form of more traditional Irish instruments... Perhaps a lead solo with some uilleann pipes... And some trad percussion too. Just a thought... The song stands up really well as it is Cian, so don't change a thing for me cheers andy

Thanks all. I have tweaked the track again https://soundcloud.com/cian-mcgovern/trasna-na-dtonnta-1/s-nVVFFThe only thing Im worried about is the backing vocals at around the 2:30 mark Rimshot, Ive subtly applied some of your suggestions. Andy, great idea for sure, but those instruments are not feasible at the moment. Cian

Big smiles again. I'd bring your vocals up just a hair, the big drum washes them out just a bit when it hits. Backing vocals work great as they are imho. cheers, -TOm

That's really good Cian. Vocals are wonderful, right up there and supported by a fine arrangement which builds nicely. Top job.

Cool, cool. (Tom, Warren, James) Workin on the video right now, should have it up tomorrow, its insightful. PS - for sure philz, its the "bread & butter" of songs that irish families would know, not as much the new generation however

Wonderful Cian. Great tune I'm not familiar with. Vocals as always are soulful and expressive. I love that flute. I think that's the first time I ever heard the Gaeilge language.

Ohgrant, go raibh maith agat! the flute is actual irish "tinwhistle", its a simple instrument and really soars above the tune in places. Here it is anyway, the youtube footage taken of fishermen working of the south-east coast of Ireland! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAM_Made2wM Cian

Hello Cian Sounds like a nice soulful song...but visuals of modern fishing technology...may be there could be more of the nature element. Regards, Kane

Hey Kane, Thanks for you good feedback. If I had my way and budget I would of done this with a small timber boat with a fishing rod, however this is what I could access. Im happy with it, it shows how it currently is if anything its a good educational video. But your feedback is a good observation. Regards, Cian

I liked the video Cian. It reminded me of when I was there looking at those boats along the shore!I think it fits the music especially. The language is nice to listen to even if one doesn't know what it all means. You could be cussing me for all I know and I would love it :) Lovely music as well and well mixed. I hope you can make more:)

Real cool video, I think the mix has become much more solid since my first listen too. Other background instruments are grand too. Total pro from performances to production. Great historical piece.

haha, beagle it was my first instrument at about 4 years of age! Thanks Tim, I know you're a fellow celtic creator so delighted you could get an ear in. Grant, yes there has been updates to the mix. It is definitely a historical cultural piece for us. Regards, Cian

Sounds really good here. The vocals are great, and the instrumentation fits perfectly. No idea what you're actually singing about but it matters not a bit. It wouldn't surprise me if this were used in a documentary or similar TV show about Ireland.
