Old, unknown Blind Willie McTell recodings... advice

I have a client who is probaby in his late 70s r early 80s. He has plated acoustic guitar for decades. He was a student at GA Tech back years ago when Blind Willie used t play around Atlanta.
He has some old reel to reel tapes of Willie playing with him and some other friends. I don't think the tapes have been played in years and I am pretty sure they have some pretty good value (that I am sure Blind Willie's estate would sue over if anyone tried to comercially release them) however, I have often tought that they should be restored andreleased into the pubic domain... I mean Statesboro Blues... for real.

Any ideas on how I could approach him in such a way that he might allow me to have the tapes restored if possible. I have known him since 1984 or so, so I think he will trust me, especially if I know what I am talking about.

Advice?

Thanks,
Julien

    Hi Julien,

I only have a faint idea of what's involved with restoring tapes so I'll keep the advice as general as possible.

I would make the suggestion to restore the tapes because they're deteriorating even as you speak to him.  That the tapes would eventually fail if they weren't restored.  Then, the music would be lost.

I'd also explain each and every step that you're going to take.  A friend of mine used to restore tapes and he would actually bake them in the oven.  I don't know the details, but he was very successful at restoring tapes.  I think the baking prevented the tape from de-laminating when it got played.  Someone who isn't into the restoration process would probably get very nervous if the process wasn't fully explained.

    Good luck,
    Jan`

You start by finding someone who owns and maintains a suitable tape deck.

Then have that person inspect and decide if the tapes will survive being played back? Is the tape damp or dry? Is the oxide still attached or is it flaking off?

Then you make a pass as if it's the very last chance you have.

So, bring the levels in conservatively and ride them through the transfer.

    Then the fun starts.

I think you should simply ask your friend and see what happens.

Also, remember... that although the musician is the performer of the music... the person who owns the recording clearly owns the recordings.

    best regards,
    mike

I'd have to peacefully disagree with brother Mike on this one. It depends how old these tapes are, how they were stored as well as what format. Don't even attempt to play them yourself on a pristine deck. There would be nothing worse than attempting to play these and have them come apart right in front of the guy. There are companies that specialize in this stuff. If you can get the tapes in your hands or offer to take the guy with you to the place to have them inspected, that's a good way to go about it. This way there is full trust and it won't set off any red flags for him. But definitely look into places that do this sort of thing and find out what the procedure is...get as much info as you can, then pass it on to your friend and see what he says. The more credible info you provide while maintaining security to his tapes, the more he may go for it. But whatever you do...do NOT attempt to play these tapes yourself or allow someone with a good tape rig to play them that is not experienced on how to handle something as old and sensitive as this. It could break apart in your hands....it could fade to tape dust upon rewind..snap...the list of things that could happen are limitless.

Thanks all. I have to get a hard drive restored that was accidentally reformatted. I will ask some questions when I get that done. Maybe they will know someone in the area who is good and who is honest. Richard Goodsell lives around here, he might know who to talk to. B0b Burns (the drummer) is a neighbor but I wouldn't trust him with a brick.. though he might know someone though. He is like Ozzy on a bad day... his step daughter lived with us for about 6 months... that was a trip but, I digress.

    Thanks again...

I thought I told him to find a guy that has a tape deck?
