If I was in class, I'd do Van Halen's "I'm hot for teacher." But it would probably be a dude, and I'd probably get an F :-( "I'VE GOT MY PENCIL!" Sir, SIR! Please sit down! Oh my God! Is he? Is he playing his guitar with it? SECURITY! SECURITY!! (the callouses... OH THE HUMANITY!) Do you have ANY idea how difficult it is to orbit like that? It is beyond my ability to understand why you are in a music class of any kind. With that said? I enjoyed this.

Incredible finger tone. It's a lesson in the "it's all in the fingers" story. The beginning sort of confused me and then the second half sort of blew me away. It's inspiring to see how players never stop studying. Thanks for sharing. best regards, mike

Hi there Robbie Yes , I think I know how difficult it is to orbit like that ... the first 5 grades of my education were in a parochial school way back in the early 60's when they didn't spare the rod .. I had already seen the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan , every so often I used to bop my head to an imaginary listening to the Stones tune Satisfaction when I used to day dream ... one day a teacher w a "black costume " "w a hood " asked the whole class the question " what do you want to be when you grow up ? " one by one each student stood up in front of their desk and said various things like , I want to be president , I want to be a doctor , I want to be a fireman ...you get the drift ... I stood up , started pretending I had an air guitar ( btw ....air guitars had just been invented right around that time ) and did a little happy dance while shaking my head like an imaginary Beatle and said something like "when I grow up I want to Rock ..." the errrmm teacher looked at me with a very pissed off look on her face and said in front of the whole class .. "you want to what ?" sheepishly , I did my little happy dance again w a very red blushed embarrassed face and said "when I grow up I want to Rock " I'm not making this sh*t up , the next thing I can remember was that "teacher w the black costume " charged me like a raging bull in front of the whole class and handed me my first loss in a M M A style sport .... Hot for teacher w your visual .. is very funny stuff actually ..... having gotten that memory and story off my chest ....I 've got a long ways to go ...w music and learning I've enjoyed studying music in this class .... thank you very much Robbie my forum friend for having kind words to say about my playing Kenny

Hi Mike , I did my best to try to give everybody here a heads up when I mentioned quirky ... the first 37 or so seconds of the song are the songs melody ... I'm happy you dig my guitar tone and playing .... I'm using the guitar that is in the songs photo ...Washburn J 4 that was recorded direct w out anything ... when it came time to mix , I put a touch of compression and a little reverb on it .... I'm very pleased with myself for having done this song and I feel that I kinda surprised myself playing over the section you enjoyed .... while recording and improvising on this song I was reading the songs chart .... I had already tried recording and playing this a few times w out the chart and found my self in a ditch on the side of the road thank you for the song listen and kind words Kenny

Hi Guys , I thought I might step in here and offer a few explanations on what is going on here with the song . Olhos De Gato , the song itself is very new to me . Like most folks ..i thought this song was dissonant .... I've actually gotten to the point where I can hear the simple beauty of how the melody and chords interact ... one of the things I noticed after recording my version of the song was the song actually sounds like a cat meowing and doing some of the vocal guttural cat sounds in the melody ... I know it sounds crazy ..yet I can hear it in the first 40 seconds of the song The first time I heard Olhos De Gato played by professionals is when I did a u tube search and saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Rg6BtOJ9o I don't expect to change anybody's opinion of the song by stating my observations here. I'm very glad that Olhos De Gato ..was my homework ... it is possible , I would have never found out about the song to begin with and my whole opinion has changed drastically about Olhos De Gato ... I really dig the song and want to dig deeper .. if you dig you dig , if you don't you don't it's totally OK w me ...it took a while for me to dig the important thing to me is that I DIDNT Quit and hung in there and did my assignment ....whew... If I may say so ..I do like what I played thank you for your patience Kenny

Unbelievable story! It sounds like something from a communist regime! If a teacher tried something like that with my kid, I believe I would have to meet them in the parking lot after school to administer a beat down. And it was supposed to be a simpler time? it's all true Robbie, many years later when I was an adult I wound up living only a few miles from there ... One day I went back to the church and school to try and put my feelings into perspective ... While walking around the school and the church I saw that that they had put barbed wire up along the top of the roof of the school ....( a couple of storys ) the neighborhood itself was tough even back in the day , the passage of time had only severed to let the neighborhood go down even more from what I had remembered . Any way , I decide to walk up to the church . in my mind I'm thinking maybe I can go take a look inside and say a quick prayer , I was hoping to find some sort of closure and release since I had been carrying my hurt feelings around for a number of decades . I go to open the door and I see that is chained shut with large chains and a padlock ... (this is in broad day light on a week day and this place was still a school that was teaching ) I walk back down the stairs to the street level , light a cigarette and I just stand there looking at the school to the left (covered in barbed wire on the roof ) and I just stand there looking at the church right dead smack in front of me ... while I 'm standing there having my cig , I'm feeling a little bit confused inside myself and I'm wondering how do i deal with this ? so I say to myself , I'm doing the best I can and I want to let this thing go so I can find peace .. I'm not making up what I'm about to say next ... I'm standing there looking , I feel a little breeze and I hear a soft whisper of a voice in side my head that says to me " don't worry about it Kenny , I can't get in there either " true story my friend Kenny

jsaras Now that you've completed the course did you learn anything new about melody, harmony or rhythm?
Hi jsaras , WOW, that is an excellent question . I had started my journey many many years ago when it came to melody , harmony and rhythm. as far as that chapter goes , I was very fortunate to have studied with and exchange knowledge with musicians that were way above my understanding and playing capabilities . Many of these musicians were well respected players in their musical genre s . A few of the players that helped me the most have passed on , and in their own life times a few of them were considered legends . over the years , what I have learned from my association with them has been a constant source of inspiration . Yet the simple truth of the matter is ..nobody in this world can come along and do the things for a person that that person has to do for them selfs .... I bring this up because during various times in my life I've been at the right placed at the right time w all the right people , but I wasn't fully prepared and ready for prime time ..... a few things that I did have going in my favor was , I was listening , I was friendly, I was watching, I was open and the players I looked up to were all very happy to have me along for the ride ... even if it meant I was there as a fly on the wall ...lol now to answer your question , no I didn't learn all that much new about melody , harmony, and rhythm .... I did learn a lot about what it means to remain teachable and flexible on musical concepts Gary Burton put a lot of thought and effort into having top shelf lessons and assignments I learned how to respect my peers and the musical efforts they put forth ..... the class did have some top shelf players , and on the flip side ...a few musical talents with the ears and playing chops of a Vinnie Van Gogh I learned that all the intentions in the world don't replace "putting out" doing the work and getting it done ... some things musically come very easy to me , not because of any other reason then I listen, listen ,and listen , and that I have been playing guitar my whole life ... the thing about that is I can be very unstructured and start a lot of things , get enjoyment out of learning part of it and then I'm left with a thousand starts and no completed musical task .. I found having to meet deadlines and having to review my fellow class mates work to be somewhat of a challenge at first being a perfectionist with an inferiority complex is how I've described myself to a few people when I feel like making fun of myself .....I had to take that idea and put that Sh*t in the trash can lol by taking the class I have found that it is OK to do the best you can in any given moment and that is all anybody can ever really ask from them selfs .... I found out that Yeah , I got holes in my music .....yet, it's all good ... I learned a lot about myself and it might not seem like much to some people out there that are super productive I'm very proud of the fact that I didn't give up , I did everything I was asked to do ...and I did it their way ... I did get my grades today on assignment 5 which was 2 parts Olhos De Gato and F Blues ... I got a 4 ...top score is a 4 so the class for me was a great learning experience ...and I feel tuned up as a human being Kenny
