I heard that a lot of the patches are more like a Combi and don't sit well in a mix.

That is a legitimate criticism, IMO. However, composers who use synthesized sounds typically do not just drop them in unmodified, any more than you'd drop in a raw acoustic guitar track and expect it to fit in the mix.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Well, for that asking price of $499, I could get me Komplete 8 which has 27 products in 1. Omnisphere seems to be really expensive for just one virtual instrument, soft synth with a vast sound collection. One could just get a decent soft sampler and buy loops/sample cds. And there would be more than just Combis or sounds that sound like they came off of Omnisphere. I'm sure it's great and all but there are other means and products that are better overall than just Omnishpere. It is too much like a software version of an actual workstation. Now, would you prefer using one of those or Sonar?

Komplete definitely gives you a broader sound palette than Omnisphere for the same price, especially if it's your first big purchase. With it you get drums, some good synths, and best of all, Kontakt. I always recommend that people start out with Kontakt and build from there.

And if you're just after traditional synth sounds, $500 will buy you a whole bunch of capable synthesizers. You could get both Alchemy and Zebra and have an enormous sound set to play with. Plus there are a whole bunch of useful synths out there that are completely free such as Zebralette, Tyrell N6, Synth1 and Oatmeal.

Having said all that, the statement that "there are other means and products that are better overall" is off the mark. Have a listen to my first real application of Omnisphere; it's doing something that none of the above-mentioned products can do.

Don't forget that once you buy in with Eric Persing, you pretty much buy in for life.  He's pretty generous with his upgrade policy.  For instance, Trilogy to Trillian was free.

I have all three major Spectrasonics products and they do work well together.  Can't wait for the next iteration of RMX.  Should be groovy.

A very good point indeed. Spectrasonics is an outstanding company that provides incredible value to their customers. Eric Persing runs an admirable company, and his past experience with Roland Corporation has given him an incredible amount of insight into producing world-class music software.

Great work on 13 Virgins. A very good mix! Impressive.
