Omniverse 1 & 2 for Omnisphere - Review

http://www.bydavidrosen.com/2014/01/09/thing-rules-pluginguru-omniverse-1-2/

Hey everyone,

This is a new feature I've started on my site called This Thing Rules. I'm reviewing various VSTs and music software and along with each review, posting a new piece of music made either entirely with that software or heavily featuring it. This one is for PlugInGuru's Omniverse 1 & 2 Expansion Packs for Omnisphere. They're great packages, so if you're an Omnisphere user I'd definitely recommend checking them out. You can hear my demo and read more about them at the link above. This is the third review I've done in this series and I have 2 more in the works already.

Enjoy!

David

Great idea. Something you'll have fun with, for sure. You'll be able to promote your own music and probably get some free stuff from vendors, at least once you get an online reputation established. They'll eat this up over on kvr.

I like that you include links to the vendor and, perhaps more important, the product's price. I hate listening to a demo, getting excited and then having to navigate to the "buy now" page before finding out it's $700.

    Looking forward to future installments.

Right on glad you liked it. I feel like it's a good way to create new content on my site, while also getting to post new music that isn't necessarily for one of my composing gigs or one of my albums. And if I get any free stuff along the way, I'll take it :-)

Also I didn't even think of posting it on KVR, I should totally do that... Love that site.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep them coming. I got tripped up by the Holidays but now I'm starting to get back on track and have 3 things lined up to review. I'm aiming to post every Thursday :-)

There's sure no shortage of "things that rule" to review. I'd advise you to stick to simple products that can be concisely described in a short article, e.g. a patch library versus, say, Alchemy, which would require a book. Maybe even specialize in patch libraries, as that's a reviewer's niche I've not seen anyone cover.

Not a bad idea. Actually 2 of the 3 I'm currently working on ARE patch libraries. So yea that will probably be a great niche for me.

Might I then recommend Joseph Hollo's Zebra libraries, Pads Heaven 1 & 2?

I'm a do-it-yourself guy, so although I check out lots of patch libraries and snag any freebies I come across, I've actually handed over cash for only 3 of them, 2 of which are the aforementioned Hollo collections. (The third was an Omnisphere library that was kind of disappointing, so I don't talk about it.)

Also be sure to check out the coming (in a couple weeks) free version of Synthmaster. Several of the add-on patch libraries offered for that synth are very good, such as Nori Ubukata's "Art Rock Basics", which replicates many classic synth and organ sounds of the 70's. You can sound like Yes and ELP for $15!

I will check them out for sure. I have Zebra so definitely should be something for me to check out. I'll take a look into the free version of Synthmaster and its expansions as well.

I actually really like your idea btw of focusing on patch libraries. I still want to cover some full VSTs as I go, but it's definitely a niche worth focusing on for me.

Also I posted on KVR last night and already got an extra 20 hits. Thanks for the tip on that... I SHOULD have thought of that myself but didn't haha. :-)
