One Last Try Tonight - late Beatles era vibe (remix)
I bought a Rickenbacker 4003s bass a little while back. I couldn't wait to record with it. I immediately started playing a descending riff. I brought the idea to piano and this song came out. This song is about the Ric bass. I figured, why not? My wife and a couple friends helped me with the instrumentation. Please check the mix! I am always appreciative. Thank you. https://soundcloud.com/jmasno5/one-last-try-tonightand if you dig the never ending ending use this link for 21 more seconds https://soundcloud.com/jm...-last-try-tonight-long

Good job there masarone. I might try to add some more dynamics. The Beatles did this diatonic descending thing that you've captured nicely, but there was much more drama. The lyrics are great!

Nice! Listening to it on headphones, I really appreciate the panning you have chosen throughout mix. The arrangement is well thought out and both the strings and the backing vocals fit really well (something I never get right)

Agree with eph221 - throw in some CC11's to make the strings more dynamic, that'd be good. Love the song, it sounds like something Ringo's band would do. The Rick sounds very McCartney-esque (although I kept waiting for some high notes to pop in). Great mix overall. You might want to experiment with EQ to help separate the instruments better, as it's pretty dense. Let it simmer for a week (or two) and then revisit it afresh. Whenever I do that, I always hear frequency masking that wasn't obvious while I was working on the project.

Eduard, Dave and David, Thank you for listening. Yes, you guys are absolutely right. It sounds too thick at times. Also, I think it my be guitar riff heavy. I think I mixed too many hours in a row. I stopped listening to it and will revisit next weekend. I already have some ideas as to what to do. I went to Google to figure out what a CC11 is ;) Most of the orchestration was given to me in .wav files. But I'll figure out something.

John, I think this sounds great! I think the mix is a little heavy (denser) on the left side. That's likely because you have the guitars competing with the strings, so some judicious panning and EQ might be in order. Other than that,l I think you achieved what you set out to do. Very cool tune! Regards, Dan

Obviously the Beatles flavor is "abundant" here. Nice job .....yeah it's dense and I'll look forward to a remix. Mostly it made me want to listen to 10cc! and that's pretty cool, too. Congrats on the tune/track and the Rick bass! Michael

Dan and Michael, Thank you for listening! I haven't listened to it since last week. Hopefully that will clear my head with a fresh approach and I will be able to clean it up sometime within the next few days.

I could just picture you standing there in Guitar Center or whatever. Fun tune. I like the bluesy vocal touches in your melody, and the Beatles pulse and the bgv's are reall really cool! I listened to the extendo-version, really really great mix. I would call for like a 1/2 db more louderer on that lead vocal. Can't always hear the lyrics for the "thickness" of the mix, which is otherwise well managed. You might focus around 1:37 as an example. Man I dig that extended ending groove, its really great! !! The only other idea I had would be to add a bit of that bass soloing in the very beginning, because it's the subject of the song but it's not really featured. Just a thought. But the lyrics I guess are non-Rick specific so I guess nevermind. great tune! -Tom cheers, - Tom

Very nice! I do like that extended ending. I hear ELO/Jeff Lynne too, but that makes sense. I echo various comments made previously and look fwd to hearing a remix. Question: Did you have to do anything "special" or "different" re: tracking the Ric bass? I ask because a buddy brought his Ric over to my "studio" and we had a little difficulty getting a good track, i.e., just didn't sit well, seemed a bit overdriven, just kinda wonky. Just wondering. He's coming over again soon and we'll focus on it more. No problems tracking a good old P-Bass or my Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. Good work!

Yes, to me it sounds like a song ELO stole from the Beatles but The Beatles stole it back after it had been tampered with.

When I open the project I'll have a closer look. I know I recorded through a Tech 21 VT-Bass pedal. I rolled off some bass and compressed 4-1 on the way in. I recorded the bass long ago and the song went dormant for awhile. I know I used a pick, and probably used both pickups with the 4003s' vintage tone knob engaged. That's a circuit they put in to bring back the gnarly bridge tone. I also picked the strings closer to the neck because I know at the time of recording I still had that stupid pickup guard on the bass. Which by the way, is not even real metal!

Remix is finished. The new mix mutes the acoustic guitar during the verses, I deleted a guitar riff, panned the piano back and forth hard left then center, re EQ'd/panned some other instruments, remembered to turn on Waves Vocal Rider, etc.

Totally enjoying this (the long version). I feel a Tom Petty vibe (and I don't mean that in a bad way). Really like the way it breaks down going into the solo, very cool. Oh, I guess that's the "outro". And then that last little bit with the acoustic at the end, nice touch. Mix is working great on my Bose headphones (this is the remix, right?) Well done! T

Well, I never heard the old mix, but I think the current one is great and so is the song. Maybe the bass could come up some. Love the guitar riffs myself. Reminds me of George Harrison trying to write like John Lennon. (You know, "When We Was Fab" etc.)

Thomas, Thanks for listening. The ending to the extended version was a happy accident. I intended on a fade out when recording. I stopped recording when I thought I had enough fade time. I ended on the first beat of the next four measures. When I handed to song off to my keyboardist and guitarist, they too played it out without screwing around that sometimes happen when you know you are past the fade point.

Wayfarer, thank you for listening. Your comment is funny because I actually used "When We Was Fab" as my reference track for this song. In fact, I use Harrison's Cloud 9 album as reference tracks all of the time. I think those recordings are great.

Personally, I don't have all of George's albums, but of the ones I've owned and from what I've heard of the others on the radio and YouTube etc., I think Cloud 9 is the best one he did. And the production/engineering is top-notch. There are a few songs he did over the years where you can see how much John rubbed off on him, and "Fab" is one of them. That little obtuse piano line that comes up during the choruses is so typical John Lennon. Good on ya mate.

I just had my first listen, to the second version. Where's the Beatles influence?? j/k, it's obvious. I liked it, very solid and very Beatles-esque; from the chord changes to the string hits to the smooth & wide BGVs to the George-ish guitar fills and some very Ringo-ish fills. But I also get the ELO vibe too, probably because of the strings, and the chord changes, and... Huh. Anyhow, nice job John. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks Steve! This song is my debut on drums. V-Drums that is. A simple beat. I had them wired to Additive Drums 2. The first part of the song has no high hat just like Ringo use to do sometimes. My friend, Ben, is a pretty good George Harrison guitar student.
