One Thing I Ask-African Reggae/Song of the Month @ CSN
UPDATE: This song was chosen for song of the month at Christian Songwriters Network. Thanks to everybody who helped us with recording, mixing issues. We have only being recording ourselves for little over a year and you on this forum have helped us every step of the way learning the technical side of recording. Thank you very much for helping us. This is the best forum. Hi everyone, here is our original reggae song which is our title cut from our cd we are working on. This was recorded 24bt/48hz, we were using 96hz but that was taking too much space so we cut back down to 44.1hz (but somehow this was recorded at 48hz!) This is our mix with no mastering which we will have done by someone else. Thanks for listening and we appreciate you all. IJenNeh needs a electric bass player: Are you kidding? The vocal bass sounds really cool. A lovely mix on this, my only nit was the percussion got a bit tiresome for me all the way through I would have preferred a bit of light and shade to emphasise the structure a bit. Falling back to just the merest hint of a 'one drop' would really emphasise the finesse of the vox in places. I'd love to hear this mastered as the polish would bring out all the fine-grain that is already in this track. Excellent, I really enjoyed this.

I liked this tune, and it has a great vibe. It sounds like it is mono. Any reason why you haven't done a stereo mix? The mono sound certainly gives it a retro sound, but a stereo mix would open it up a little more and allow each track to be heard a little more. Still, that's a minor point because I think you have created a pretty cool tune. sja

Nice work guys! The mix is excellent but I think an electric bass would really lift the song - something very low and subby for everything else to sit on top of, there would be no need to omit the bass vocals though - with a low enough bass the two would work really well together. Cool stuff Steve

I always enjoy listening to Reggae vocal performances.... this was a good performance... I agree, a light bass, shake up the percussion a bit, and spread the voices in a stereo field. Mastering will make this sound good.

Yes, always joyful to hear your music. I'm hearing a hardness in the main / lead vocal, like there's a bit too much 1K or compression and not enough 200Hz ~ 400Hz; has it been eq'ed there? The bass vox is nice an warm (no issue with that). Beautiful. Fun.

Thanks for all the positive comments and listens, it is really fun on the Sonar forum. You guys are great. Karalie & IJenNeh

Thanks for the technical info, I have sweeped off the low ends as far as eq, nothing else. How do you do it? Sorry for being such a newbie, but a person has to start somewhere. Thanks again for the listen.

Karalie & IJenNeh The mix is great, I was just meaning that I felt that the percussion track could maybe do with some structuring rather than having the same intensity all the way through....but hey, when I start making music as good as this maybe I'll be more qualified to say so... Just my two pennies worth from my first listen. It's a great track by any standards.

I have sweeped off the low ends as far as eq, Yes, this must be it. What do you mean "sweeped off the low end" -- do mean you have high pass filter or a low shelf cut, probably set at 100Hz to 200Hz? If it's a LPF move that back to 70Hz or so; if it's a low shelf cut, reduce the amount of cut to just 1 dB or so.

Hey, nice little song there and a nice groove to it. As for the mix you could do some panning and get great results, but be sure to save everything as a stereo file. Usually some presets save it as a stereo file automatically unless you are specifically workin in mono. You will have a left and a right (top and bottom) in your file if it is in stereo. Mono will only show up as a single line music file. If your tracks are mono you could pan the vocals right and the nstrumentation left, or there are many ways to pan the stereo file as well. You just need to play around with the different tracks and save several different versions of them and then when you mix them together you should be able to clearly hear the differences. You'll get it, just keep trying different approaches until you find something you really, really like. I enjoyed this though as is, but you can do much more with it. Keep working on it and repost when you come up with a little different version in stereo. John

Outstanding. Wonderful song. I love listening to your songs. It is stereo. Do not fear. I am not sure I would call this reggae though. More carib/african. Cheers Shad

Keep working on it and repost when you come up with a little different version in stereo Hey guys, I went back and checked on my song and all the audio tracks were recorded and saved in stereo, maybe just the way I mixed this makes it appear mono or something. Yes, this must be it. What do you mean "sweeped off the low end" -- do mean you have high pass filter or a low shelf cut, probably set at 100Hz to 200Hz? I use a low shelf cut on all the tracks (set at around 16Hz), not really noticable if you listen to each track individually but a big impact on the whole song. I am not sure I would call this reggae though. More carib/african. Yes African! - Have you heard of the late Lucky Dube?, South african reggae. IJenNeh, fantastic music. Very well done.
