Open Plugin without a Mouse?

This is probably something so obvious I'm missing it, but appreciate your help (and yes, if it's obvious you may certainly laugh!).

Is there any way to open a plugin (virtual instrument/synth or effect) other than double-clicking with a mouse on the icon (virtual instrument/synth) or on the effect "row" in the FX grid?

I've searched for a menu option, but to no avail. Basically, I'm looking to map this function or assign it to a function key, but I just can't find it.

Thanks.
