Opening Rapture Session Synth Property Page Causing SONAR Artist Crash

When I add a Rapture Session 64-bit VST3 synth to my project, SONAR crashes immediately when I open the "Synth Property Page". This crash occurs when I add a synth to a project and check the "Synth Property Page" in the "Open These Windows" group on the "Insert Soft Synth Options" window.

If I do not check the "Synth Property Page" option as described above, the soft synth will be added to the project successfully. However, as soon as I try to open the properties window to select an instrument, the crash occurs.
It is worth noting that I also have a Garritan Aria Player 64-bit VST2 plugin configured. I don't have any issues with adding this soft synth and using its properties page. I have tried removing this plugin from the configuration and still experience the Rapture Session defect.

I have installed SONAR Artist and Rapture Session on my laptop; also Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. I do not experience the same problem there. I am able to successfully add soft synths on that environment. So, this appears to be a localized problem.

I suspect that this issue has more to do with the plugin than it does SONAR, but I'm not certain.

Any input/suggestions this community can provide would be very appreciated.

Thanks, Brian

I saw the post over in Cakewalk instruments. This post is in the right place. Moving it to Cakewalk Instruments would not gain anything other than it will hang around on the first page longer.

Crash could mean a lot of things and rarely happens without a message or log entry somewhere. Maybe providing a better description of the crash would help.

I wasn't certain if I had put this post in the right forum.  Thanks for cancelling the Instruments post.

I reported this issue to Cakewalk support on 5/19 but haven't gotten any response.  Understand they're swamped at the moment.

As soon as I attempt to open the synth properties page, the Fault Reporter asserts itself and tells me that a fault has occurred.  It asks if I'd like to submit a fault report.  I've done this a few times.  Oddly, since I updated to the 2016.06 release, the Fault Reporter is no longer working.

Once moving past the fault report, SONAR crashes.  I've tried adding an image of the Unhandled Exception window to this post but it doesn't appear to be working.  In brief, the "Error - Unhandled Exception" window says:

----
A fatal error has occurred in plugin 'Rapture Session.'
Module: c:\program files\common files\vst3\Rapture Session\RaptureSession_64.vst3

A crash dump file base been created here: ...

Exception Code: c0000005
Address: ...

As a result of this error SONAR is about to exit abnormally.
Should SONAR attempt to save a recovery copy of your work?
----

I can fill in the rest of the detail if that helps.

Thanks, Brian

Do you have a CWBRN from the initial report?
What driver mode are you using?

Weird tha a plugin issue could be caused by driver mode!

just a sec

First report I sent was CWBRN-51195.

I've seen driver modes mentioned a fair amount on these posts.  I am new to Cakewalk products but I think this means the Driver Mode under the Playback and Recording preferences.  If this is the correct setting, my current mode is set to MME (32-bit).  Worth noting that I think this was the default when I set up SONAR.  I did not consciously / intentionally change this setting.

You are correct, MME is the default for your machine. And while others have mentioned it is unlikely to be the issue were it set to something else it might have contributed to your problem.

Have you tried reinstalling the plug-in? If so, was it by clicking the Reinstall button in the Command Center, by uninstalling, cleaning the registry and reinstalling or some other method?

I tried performing a Reinstall and also an Uninstall then Install from within CC.  I tried to uninstall and reinstall SONAR also.

For the SONAR reinstall, I had cleaned some registry settings based on some information that I found in the KB.  I can't say as there were any specific keys for Rapture that I deleted though.  Would have to go back and reread that article.

I do not know how to run Rapture in stand alone mode.  CC says "This product cannot be launched directly".  Is there a way to start it independent of SONAR?

The stand alone synth RaptureSession_64.exe should be in the folder with RaptureSession_64.dll
The default path is "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Rapture Session"

On second though that won't work because you do not have an ASIO interface, I suppose you could try adding ASIO4All but before that we might try a clean install of Rapture Session. Give me a minute to look up the registry keys.

The steps to remove Rapture Session with the Command Center are
  1. Run the uninstall for Rapture Session from the Command Center context menu. Only uninstall the Rapture Session line, there is no need to remove the content.
  2. After running the uninstaller, remove Rapture Session's registry keys by doing the following:
    • Open the run prompt by holding down the Windows key on your keyboard and pressing "R"
    • In the Run Prompt, type in the following: regedit
    • Click [OK] and the Registry Editor will be opened
    • ***Back up your Registry before making any changes. You can do this by left clicking on "Computer" in the registry and then going to File | Export.
    • After backing up your Registry, delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\Rapture Session
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\Rapture Session

Use the command center to install Rapture Session again.

Just followed through these instructions and have ended up with the same result.  The first key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, did not exist.  The second key did exist and I removed it before reinstalling Rapture Session.

Should I try ASIO4All?

OK, it must be added on the fly when needed.
Does the machine which works use the internal sound chip or do you have a dedicated audio interface for it?

They're both using integrated Realtek audio devices.  The working machine is a Dell Precision laptop.  Both run Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

One difference on the machine that isn't work is that it has a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce video card with available audio on HDMI.

I disabled the NVIDIA sound devices in Device Manager as it would be very unlikely that I would use them.  The plugin crash continues to occur.

Are there any log files present at which I could take a look?

None generated by SONAR. There might be something in the Windows logs. Failing that the best information is in the minidump SONAR creates which is only useful to Cakewalk.

I took a look at the Windows Event Viewer and see a few things.  Probably not very helpful in solving the problem but will get some more data on the record.

1.) As expected, there is an application error event being captured:

2.) As reported earlier, I am no longer able to send fault reports.  This was working fine but stopped working when I updated to the 2016.06 release.  The FaultReporter.exe is crashing and is logging 2 different events:

a.) An Application Error

Re: Opening Rapture Session Synth Property Page Causing SONAR Artist Crash 2016/07/03 03:28:50 (permalink)
I wonder if it would matter if you tried a test where you temporarily took your VST 3 path out, or perhaps there is a better way - but essentially whenever a VST 3 plugin and a VST 2 plugin for the same synth are present, Sonar will use the VST 3 plugin instead, so scook perhaps you could comment on the most logical way of getting the VST 3 version out of the equation - for testing purposes - so that the VST 2 version is what would get loaded into the project, or even a new empty project, other than inserting the VST 2 version.

This only comes to mind because lots of folks in Sonar had issues with the Arturia V Collection 3's initially delivered VST 3 versions of those synths.  SOME, like 3 or 4, just did NOT like running in Sonar as VST 3, and the workaround for THAT situation was to temporarily move or rename those (cannot recall the precise method of getting them out of being seen by Sonar), and the VST 2 versions of those particular failing 3-4 of them worked FINE.

Could it be that since you are running fine in other Windows versions, that your Windows maintenance is not completely up to date on that particular machine?  THAT has certainly caused access violations before for folks - like the giant swath of folks that were missing SP1 for Windows 7, and I believe Sonar wouldn't install, or IF it installed, it didn't run - that sort of thing.

Anyways - could something along those lines be happening here?

Lastly, for now (nearly 2:30 in the wee hours with a wake up coming at 5:30), I don't know if there are any free versions of something like this or not, but I picked up an application for somewhere around or less than $50 usd, called WhoCrashed, and I used that to analyze some crashes and I found it quite helpful.

I will check back on this thread and try to further assist Sunday late afternoon, after what will be a grueling time of things for my day prior to then. :)

At some point, I DO recommend you pick up at least a decent but inexspensive dedicated audio interface, with Windows support into Windows 10.  There are several in the $130-$200 range that would fit the bill well for that - certainly I think your computer would work WAY less hard on dealing with an application like Sonar going THAT route, particularly if you begin to want to get into any real complexity with your projects.

Hang in there - scook is a great person to have helping - and if I can help in any way, I certainly will try, and maybe some others will jump into it all as well.  I am just stuck with a block of time from 7:00 AM through around 2:00 PM of solid 'me and my brain and my fingers as a keyboard player are required'.

Now, however it is time for zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Thanks, I had not thought about plug-in format. No need to mess with scan paths, use the VST3 migration settings. They are on the same page Preferences > File > VST Settings. Disable both check boxes to insure the VST2 format shows up in the plug-in lists and will not get replaced when used in a project.

I really do not think this is a driver issue. ASIO would be useful in testing whether the stand alone synth works is all.

I unchecked the "Hide Related VST2 Plug-ins" and "Replace if Possible on Project Load" boxes.  Unfortunately, I got the same result (crash) when I added the VST2 plug-in and tried opening the properties page.

Both of the machines that I'm working on are using the same version of Windows; namely, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.  They are both current from a Windows update perspective.  The Dell Precision laptop is working; the Dell Optiplex mini-tower (detail in my signature -- above) is not.

What are your thoughts on my installing a trial of Rapture Pro?  I'm concerned that would just muddy the waters, though.  At least in my current state, I have e-mail support for Session.  I have a feeling my Rapture Session ticket is not very high on their list, at the moment. Which I understand, believe me.

Yeah, that does not surprise me.

RPro is a different plug-in. It might work where Rapture Session does not but I doubt installing the demo will resolve the Rapture Session issue. Also whatever is causing Rapture Session to fail will probably bring down Rapture Pro too. We just have not found the difference between the two installations. Still if you want to mess with it, with the experience gained so far you know how to cleanly remove and reinstall Cakewalk products. On the other hand, let's say RPro works and RSes is still broken, are you prepared to buy the upgrade?

There should have been a dump included with the fault reports that I submitted.  I have submitted a total of four: 51195, 51196, 51778, and 51779.  Since the FaultReporter stopped working with 2016.06, I might rollback and try submitting a new report.

I have some of the recent dump files on my PC if they would help.  I'm going to have a go at seeing if I can find anything meaningful in the files.  I'm used to Unix/Linux cores but I'll see what I can do with this Windows dump.

Thinking of other differences in the two different machines, the one that is not working had SONAR X1 LE installed before I made the upgrade to SONAR Artist.  I have no idea if this could be related but wanted to put it out there.

I opened the .dmp file in Visual Studio 2010 (installed on a different laptop I'm using) and here's what it reported:

Exception code: 0xc0000005
Exception Information: The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access.

Searches for this error code seem to point to malformed or incomplete registry entries.

Unfortunately, VS isn't giving me much more meaningful information.  I opened the file in WinDbg and it didn't yield much either.  Though, admittedly I am not an expert in this tool and without the source code I won't be able to see much detail.
