Opening X1 songs.
Here's a funny one. My pc will not open X1 songs unless X1 is open and the track chosen that way. If I try the right click method on the X1 icon that lives on the bottom of the Windows screen it only lists my old 8.5 songs, and even if I go to where the X1 songs live in C/Cakewalk Projects and open one 8.5 boots up! I have tried to associate the tracks to X1 using Window's "Open with" but it only lists 8.5, and hunting down the X1 program using the browse feature is ignored. None of this is a show stopper but it would be nice if it worked as expected. Any ideas (that don't involve the removal of 8.5 or the re-installation of X1)? Grum.

Try this... right-click on a project file. Choose Open With > Choose Default Program. In the dialog box, make sure the Always Use option has a checkmark next to it. Then browse for the SONAR X1 program (exe) file. Then click OK. Does that work? Scott -- Scott R. How about if you use the Default Programs feature in Windows? Click the Start button in Windows. Then choose Default Programs over on the right of the Start menu. In the window, choose the second option (Associate a File Type). Then find the CWP extension in the list. Select it and choose the Change Program button. Find and choose SONAR X1. Click OK. Click Close. How about that? Scott -- Scott R. I've already tried that as well - it just goes to the same screen where you associate a program with a file (extension). When I double click on the X1 program it just pops back and shows the 8.5 icon! Grum.

You have to setup your PC (Control Panel/User Accounts...I think) and make sure you're the Administrator. (Sometimes, software won't work or load if this isn't set to Admin). Also, (if needed) before running a software, you can right click on the software icon and choose "Run as Administrator" (in case it's not set up as Admin).

I am running as an Administator but I figured there might be something else I can do to really tell the pc who is in charge! I have really gone to town on the pc since starting this thread - checking for everything I can do to make the file association work but it just does not want to know. I'm getting the impression that this is either a unique problem or nobody else opens X1 by clicking on an song file. Grum

To be honest, I always open through the X1 icon.....however, I've clicked on Midi files (from my email) which opened Sonar. So, don't know what's causing it not to link/open...

I just tried the midi thing and 8.5 comes up as a choice to open and X1 isn't. Hunting for X1 via the "open with" screen has the same effect as previous efforts - i.e. bugger all happens. Grum.

It works for me although I rarely use it that way. Right clicked a CWP file, selected Open With, selected SONARPDR for X1 and it opened up before my eyes. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit.

grumbleweed4162 ...... - checking for everything I can do to make the file association work but it just does not want to know. I'm getting the impression that this is either a unique problem or nobody else opens X1 by clicking on an song file. ........ If you're still having this problem, and don't mind messing with the (Win7x64) registry, you can probably fix it there. In regedit, do a search on the full path of your 8.5 sonarpdr.exe. You can replace it with the full path for the X1 installation. You only want to do this in the keys that specify the command associated with the filetype. For example, for a project file, the key is: HKLM\Software\classes\CakewalkProjectFile\Shell\open\command Bundle files will have a separate entry, etc. As always, back up any portion of the registry you intend to change. Doing the stuff you've already tried should have accomplished this automatically, so if you do in fact find the 8.5 version referenced in those keys, there's probably something else going on - eg. a UAC problem. HTH -Ron I followed up the UAC idea - I logged in as my son and could associate X1 with the song file (and had the fun of watching what Sonar does when somebody else goes to use it for the first time). As I am the main user on the pc and have all of the admin rights what can I do to make it respond as it should? (I'm not keen on messing with the registry).

As I am the main user on the pc and have all of the admin rights what can I do to make it respond as it should? (I'm not keen on messing with the registry). .......... Ah. Multiple logins. (Not the case here; would have been helpful to mention this in first place, but understood you didn't appreciate significance.) Hopefully someone with direct expertise will advise. (Cancel my registry tweak advice.) Perhaps X1 was installed from your son's account, without admin rights. The fact that you have admin rights doesn't automatically expose the program's initiation to them. Windows distinguishes user privileges from program privileges. (That's why even an administrator gets that "this program needs to be elevated, etc. " message sometimes.) When you are logged in, does X1 appear in the Control Panel's Programs and Features section (as it should under your son's login)? Your son could unintall and you could reinstall from your own login, but there may be a less tedious way. One thing to try under your login, since you have admin rights: navigate to the actual X1 install directory - probably C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR X1 Producer\ right click on sonarpdr.exe click properties=>security tab=>Advanced=>Permissions. Select all administrators and click Change Permissions Select them again and click Edit. Assign full control. "OK" out. May as well repeat the process for the entry representing just yourself. What I'm not clear on is whether file associations are in a single place in the registry and simply need to be exposed on a per user basis, or whether they need to be defined initially on a per user basis. If the above does not work, then I can only think to uninstall completely from your son's login and reinstall from your own, since it's during install that the proper file associations should be established. (Come to think of it, the problem may stem from simply bypassing that screen during the install. Then again, that doesn't explain why it works properly under your son's login.) It's not a complicated issue (despite my making it sound so ;) , just needs to be done right. Hopefully someone with more explicit knowledge of the process will confirm/improve/modify/replace my advice. Good luck, -Ron

Good luck, -Ron I need to point out that experimenting with my son's log in was the first time Sonar X1 has ever been opened by somebody other than me on this pc (hence my comment "and had the fun of watching what Sonar does when somebody else goes to use it for the first time"). It is obviously messed up - I also had a go at the new permissions suggestion (again) and that did nothing (again) - and I have got to the point that I'm going to install W7 64 bit so I can install the 64 bit version of Sonar. I was hoping 64 bit rewire would be released before taking the plunge but stuff it. Thanks for the attempts at help. Grum

I've just dragged a bunch of "useful stuff" from my C drive to my backup drive and it said one day remaining until copied!!! It now says 9 minutes so that was a quick day. I have a feeling this is going to be fun fun fun.... My ISP is going to hammer me once I've finished with everything . Grum. Edit: The 9 minutes was something else - it looks like it could be a day.
