Opening an old bun file

I have a bun file from 2001. If I open it and choose to "Store Project Audio in its own Folder", Sonar (2016.08) simply hangs after creating some folders (Project name, Audio and MixScenes). If I untick this option, it places one wav file in my wavedata folder which puts the two wav files in this project end-to-end and then hangs. So the original wav data is recoverable, but the project is not. Fortunately, I also have a wrk file which does open and gives me the envelopes/settings etc but not the audio. Hence this project seems to be recoverable.

My question is whether there is a more elegant way to do this? I would have hoped Sonar would open old bun files, but perhaps that level of backward compatibility is too much to expect. I'm sure I could install an old version to do this but I'd rather not have to (and there may be gotchas with Windows 10 and old versions of Sonar - or even Cakewalk Pro).

Cheers, Peter.

Hi Peter. Sorry about your troubles with bun files. You might want to try it on another version. For the most part, I've been able to open old bun files more than 10 yrs old.

    Hey Peter,
Did you try opening another bun file? Did you try from a CD or did you move it to your drive first?
I'm asking because the same exact thing happened to me at first. I even tried on Sonar X3e and didn't work. Then I tried another bun from a different CD and moved it to my drive before opening it and it worked in Platinum with no issues. I think my first CD is corrupted and that's why I couldn't open the bun-- maybe the same thing is happening to you? These are from 2002, so about the same era as yours. I'm on Win 7 64.

It maybe due to a CD being unwritable. Sonar needs to expand the bun file first.
