Opinions on Dell XPS 9100 for Sonar X1
I have installed Sonar X1 on my 5 year our XPS 400. While using earlier versions of Sonar, I have already discovered that my machine is not up to running Sonar as efficiently as I need. I'm looking at getting a new Dell. Mostly because I have an account with them. I just like to get opinions on the Dell XPS 9100? I'm sure people's opinions are across the board but are there any major reasons for me to not go with this machine? Thanks

I have the XPS 9000. It is my first non-handmade DAW/everything computer in a very long while, and it is working great. I upgraded to one of the faster processors available, and added RAM, but other than that it is stock, and runs everything I throw at it just fine. I run 64 bit Sonar 8.5 and X1a no problem. I kept the stock 5.1 sound card in for gaming etc, and use a PCI audio card for music creation. Again, all is well with my Dell.

Looks like an OK barebones kind of a system. I think you will be OK running X1a, depending on what audio interface you're gonna run. The poster above this post, is running a Echo Audio audio interface and reports he's running X1a OK on a similar system. Echo audio has good drivers. You'll need an audio interface with good drivers, especially if you're gonna run a 64Bit operating system (OS). What audio interface and OS do you plan on using?

You may want to wait for the XPS8300. It was introduced but pulled from sales due to the Intel Sandybridge chipset problem. I would guess they will be back in sales next month. But, the XPS line is Dell's top of the line consumer models (excluding Alienware).

I now have a new Dell XPS 9100. Computer is working great but now my Delta 1010 is not working. I can't seem to record. I have spent lots of time with support with no solution. I ready to give up. Any suggestions on a new Audio Interface that would work well with my new Dell. Thanks, Jim

What are your needs, and what sort of budget are you looking at? As for suggestions, RME if you can afford their line (great drivers, but expensive), Echo, or possibly an M-Audio Profire if not. You will be looking at PCI, PCIe, or USB.

Thanks for the response. My Budget is about $500. I can go a little over. I like what my 1010 which is the ability to assign multiple channels to separate tracks. 8 tracks are more than enough. Actually 4 to 6 is tracks would be good. I go through a mixer which has a pre-amp but it would almost be nice to eliminate the mixer. No real preference on PCI, PCIe(which not sure I have), USB or Firewire. Looking for quality, low latency, etc... 1010 was great until I can't seem to get rid of the crackles and pops even hour spending time with both Cakewalk and M-Audio support. Thanks again.

I'm thinking about getting an XPS 9100 but the Delta interface problem worries me. Is anyone having any luck getting a Delta 1010lt working with this computer, or any Win 7 64 bit Computer? Is the XPS 9100 a quiet machine?

Firewire would likely be iffy on a stock Dell, as they do not use the TI chipset. An add-in non-hybrid firewire card (i.e. not firewire and USB combined) might work. IIRC for desktops an add in card sometimes works, for laptops, generally not. Scott from ADK would know for certain. Honestly, while some have had success using a stock Dell for audio content creation, others have reported ongoing problems that were never really solved. At $500, as you describe your needs, RME will be above your budget (the 9632 is the only card within your budget). As the M-Audio Profire 610 is firewire (my bad in previous post), that may not be the best option. You are probably looking at either Roland or Emu, or still possibly M-Audio. In PCI, none of the Echo cards provide enough preamps (even the Layla 24 provides only two), though it does provide 8 line ins. Beyond that, I have not done research recently to be able to suggest a specific card.

To answer the question about the noise of the XPS 9100. There is some slight noise but I don't notice it until something shuts off, which I believe is one of the fans then it is very quiet. I think I made my decision. Looking at the Roland Octa Capture. Looks like a really good interface for the price. Its amazing how much is out there. Thank you, every one for you help.
