Opinions on New Computer

Staples is selling the Hewlitt-Packard    HP Pavilion p6710f for $400.  No monitor
The Hard Drive is 7200rpm.  The other specs are below.

So here's the question. I'm a hobbiest, get to "play" in the home studio for about 2-3 hours a week if that.  Using Sonar HS7XL, ezdrummer, ezmix both with expansion packs.  would this be a good buy?

You can go to Staples.com it's on sale next week.

the only thing I see that concerns me is the TV Tuner.  TV Tuners can cause DPC latency and/or conflicts with the soundcard drivers.  however, that wouldn't be a show stopper, if it causes you problems you could just disable it in windows and that should resolve the issues that it would be causing.  otherwise it looks like a decent system for the price.

I've had a couple of HP's over the years and I'm still using one now - the a6000m dual core.
It will come with some bloatware, but I just deleted it all off as soon as I got it.
I don't know whether you have been to the hp support site, I recently had to and with some searching, it's interesting what you can find. I have vista and run 32 bit, but the computer is suitable for Window 7 64 bit. I can only upgrade to 8gb ram (which is fine) per my motherboard info. I found all this out by going to the hp US support site - just google it if you haven't already. Then find the page where you have to input the product number.
Here are some specs for your potential machine. If you scroll  to processor upgrade you will see it appears to accept 6 core - although take more advice should you ever purchase and decide to upgrade.
Personally I tend to always wait until prices come down.

I've been tempted myself with some of the HP stuff at Staples and were it me - I'd go for it.  I have Windows 7 and a new, cheap hard drive coming for my birthday next month, so I have a cheap upgrade path otherwise....

    Good luck.

Also,  I suggest Revo Uninstaller if you haven't heard of it. It's free and on the higher settings will do a more thorough uninstall of that bloatware :)
HP have a pretty helpful forum on that site too.

My HP Pavilion laptop bit the dust when it was just a little over 2 years old.  Cost $900 new, and that was on sale - 64 bit OS, 4 gigs ram, dual core etc.  It was meant to be my desk top replacement - big mistake.  When things suddenly started dying on it, the rest went fast - And unfortunately, the problems I had turn out to be common ones among HP buyers.  The DVD drive suddenly wasn't recognized, the wireless stopped working, the monitor started flickering then died, it stopped powering up.  I spent $100 for a local shop to do what they could with it - They said it was basically well known in the trade that the Pavilions just don't live long because they're made from very cheap parts.  They did a lot of work, and it limped along for a total of two more days after they "fixed" it.

Now I face not only the budget-breaking PITA of buying a new computer, but I have these tons and tons of programs and apps I hope to get going again on the new machine.  Really frustrating.  To me it's crazy to not expect a computer to live longer than 2 years.  I don't care about constantly staying up-to-date - I just need a computer to work for me as long as possible.  Previous to that laptop, I used the same machine for 5 years - it still works fine, it's just too under-powered for what I do now.  The computer before that lasted 10 years.  It still works also, --just can't do a lot with a 256k Ram!  hehe.

I would say it will work well for your purpose. i don't know about anyone else but i have a pavilion that has spent over 4 years on the floor in the dust, runs all day and sometimes all night only thing the hard drive went, other than that, solid as a rock.
Beagle is right about the tuner but you should be able to disable it, if possible get an Intel processor though the AMDs have trouble sometimes particularly the Athlons, thats why i swapped out my old machine when processing audio the processor would only use one core on occasion (not cool) they run very, hot but as long as you keep it off the floor and in enough open air it will be fine.
