Opinions on Top plugin/VST's

I am about to start downloading some free plugins an of course it's pretty overwhelming. There are about 100 different compressors that all say they will help tigten up and warm up your tone without removing performance dynamics, etc.
I don't expect any of them to say, "well, this one kind of sucks".
So I am hoping some more experienced people can save me from months trial and error with an endless choice of plugins. What would be great is if you could just give me a few that you have used and would recommend, and maybe a reason why, or ones to stay away from.

All I am recording at this time will be pretty straight ahead instrumental rock with drum loops (or drum machine), Bass Track and as many guitar tracks as needed.
Right now, no other instruments.

So, what do you think would be the key effects and EQ's etc, that I will expect to use, and of those, what would be the best for the way I will be recording. Most guitars will be direct, I may do some micking. Bass Direct and Drum loops.

What would be a good compressor plug in for individual tracks, especially bass?
What would be a good comp for doing the final mixdown?
What kind of EQ, Parametric or Graphic and which ones?
What about any other kind of stereo widening effects or dynamic type things etc.

I read somewhere about plugins that are desiged to help place instruments in very specific spots of the stereo field. Anything like that would be cool.

If there are free ones that are great for this, that's pefect. But if I really have to buy some I'll do that too. But first I would like to try free ones.

Thanks

    Try these Tom:

    COMPRESSORS/LIMITERS/EXCITERS:

    * Antress Modern Compressor

    * Bootsy Rescue

    * CS Multiband Compressor

    * Elogoxa X-Cita

    * GVST GComp

    * Kjaerhus Classic Master Limiter

    * Pushtec Leftover Lasagne

    * Sweetboy T-sledge

    * Tessla SE

    * If you are prepared to spend a few bucks on a 'must have' piece of analogue style compression software for guitar, bass and drums, I'd heartily recommend downloading the demo of the wonderful PSP Vintage Warmer 2 - I'll guarantee you like it so much you'll end up buying this sometime!

    BASS SPECIFIC:

    * Elogoxa Baxxpander

    * Otium BassLane

    EQUALIZERS:

    * Linear Phase Graphic EQ

    * Habib EQ31

    * Kjaerhus Classic EQ

    * Voxengo Overtone GEQ

    SPATIALIZERS:

    * Binaural Simulator

    * Antress Modern Illusioniser

    REVERBS:

    * Anwida Soft DX Reverb

    * Kjaerhus Classic Reverb

    * Freeverb Too

    * DaSample Glaceverb

    * SIR 1 Convolution Reverb

    A 'must have' in your VST armoury is the (free) Voxengo Span - this is a great Spectrum Analyzer which you can insert anywhere in your project to see exaclty what the audio 'looks like'. Used in conjunction with EQ this is a very powerful tool.

    VST SUITES

    At some stage, I'd recommending downloading and trying out all the free stuff from these sites:

    * Antress Modern Plug-Ins - one download for all plugs

    * Blue Line Pack - one download for all plugs

    * Kjaerhaus Classic Series

    * Voxengo

    For some extra reading around the ins and outs of recording and mixing, I can recommend a couple of threads on this site:

    * Forum member Papa2004 has posted links to some excellent sites for reading up on compression and limiting in the SONAR Home Studio forum - CLICK HERE to go straight to the thread.

    * Click on THIS LINK to go to Dean Roddey's excellent tutorial, A Broad View Of Many Topics - for future reference, it's located in the sticky thread section at the top the Guitar Tracks forum home page.

    No problems!

    I'll find you some decent stereo wideners as well once I get a bit more time Tom.

    Too bad the more VSTs you plug in, the more latency you will have. Like Lee and Perrons sauce, use them sparingly.

    Tom,

    Antress effects are all great. They have some excellent eq's based on Neve stuff.
