Optical TOSLINK to coaxial converter

Since I switched to an RME Babyface I haven't used my VRM Box because the RME has a TOSLINK optical output and the Babyface has a coaxial S/PDIF input and I haven't dealt with that problem yet. I really don't want to set the VRM Box up as a separate interface as it's nice to be able to simply switch the headphones from the main interface to the VRM box without having to switch interfaces in Sonar.

Can anyone recommend a good S/PDIF coaxial to optical TOSLINK converter? I see them quite cheap on Amazon but I really don't know what to look for in terms of quality. Kind of sucks that I have to deal with yet another mains adapter to get my VRM Box up and running, but there you go....

M-Audio had a couple of Coax-to-Optical converters, the CO2 was bi-directiona, I think they had uni-directional versions too, but can't remember or find the model names. They worked flawlessly, and were very reasonably priced.

I've seen them on eBay at even more reasonable prices. None today, but usually around $50 or less.

FWIW I use the M-Audio DigiPatch to convert optical to copper and vica-versa, but I already had it in the rack. They show up used too, usually for around $100. But you get the ability to patch and distribute too...

Avoid the Cables-to-Go and Monoprice devices, they appear to be the same product, and I've tried a couple of them with limited success. Not worth the hassle!

(full disclosure - I worked for Midiman and M-audio way back when, so yeah, I'm biased, but I have no financial ties to today.)

I can also vouch for the Midiman CO2 converter. It has a very small footprint (3-1/2 x 2-1/4) and has always worked flawlessly for me.

Hmm thanks for the suggestions. I'm thinking that not a lot can go wrong as long as it does the basic job, and after all it's only going to be for occasionally checking mixes through the VRM box.
