Optimize Roland SPD 11 fo Sonar

How do I optimize my Roland SPD 11 for interface with Sonar? I'm looking to enter live drum tracks in MIDI so I want to send MIDI on one set/patch that includes input from a kick pedal and high hat controller. I've got the manual but I'm wondering if others have other insights or tips. After entering the MIDI data I will either assign the notes to soft synth/sound fonts or use the SPD 11 as sound module. Thanks for your help.

What do you mean "optimize" it? Just hook up your MIDI cables and record. Then you can assign output of the tracks however you want.

Well it's not quite that simple with the SPD 11. The first time I tried it, all that got recorded was the controller data of the high hat pedal. After changing some internal settings I was able to get pad data as well. However, there are a number of internal settings--such as note number--that I'm not sure if there is a "best practice" for setting up correctly. However, at that point the high hat pedal would get "stuck" closed (even though it was physically opening and closing) at times during the recording so I was wondering if I was missing something in the setup.
