Optimizing X1 for Best Performace

I want to optimize Sonar X1 like I have in the past through the AUD.ini file. Some of the options/values are no longer there. They probably took them out for a reason but I'd like to push my PC further. I do run a lot of VSTs and sometimes it stalls for a split second while in playback then continues. Anybody know any key settings or tips? Thanks.

stalling before playback could be many things.  you've not listed your equipment/computer specs, operating system, 64/32bit version of X1 you're running, soundcard specs, driver mode and latency settings, etc.

Probaly the best thing you can do is optimize your system for DPC Latency.

Did you download the DPC Latency Checker and run it. If so what readings are you getting?

I'm running a Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit 2.66 GHz Quad Core Xeon Nehalem Processor (8mb of fully shared level 3 cache. 6GB of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM, 640 GB HD @ 7200 RPM. My Soundcard is a Presonus Inspire 1394.

I feel like it should run smoothly and it does on the recording side. But when I make beats and I add that 4th or 5th VSti and plus have Reason Rewired, it starts chopping.

I downloaded the DPC program and got this:

"This machine should be able to handle real-time streaming of audio and/or video data without drop-outs."

    Test Interval: 1000 µs
    Current Latency: 176 µs
    Absolute Maximum: 179µs

    Hi locs,

Read this thread I started. After performing all the tweaks people suggested I noticed a significant improvement.

Another thing I did that boosted my performance by at least 50% (no lie!) was add a second hard drive and I keep all my audio files and samples on it, and X1/8.5 on my main C: drive.

One thing to check for is, if you have a 2nd HDD installed, make sure it's not set to go in to power save mode. You'll have to wait for it to spin up if it is and that will cause Sonar to pause when you play a project.

I tried that DPC Latency checker before doing any of the tweaks and it said I had a smoking system too so it's hard to go by it because it doesn't test with large file like Sonar uses. It is a good tool, but not foolproof.

    Good luck!

    Bub

P.S. May I suggest putting your system specs in your signature, kind of like mine. I think you'll get more responses if folks know what you're running. Which reminds me, I have to update mine to show I have two HDD's now.

Thanks for the help Bub, that thread does has some useful info on it, especially the Presonus and Sweetwater Article. I do have a second HDD with the same setup as you and it works great. I changed my power plan settings to High Performance, so we'll see if that helps.

Also look in the help file Aud.ini tweaks it only list new to X1 tweaks so you should also do asearch in the sonar faqs on the support site...

I spent my ENTIRE day fixing DPC with DPC Latency Checker and Latency Monitor (awesome progs). After disabling all devices, upgrading bios and chipset, overclocking, paging file adjustments, and literally pulling my hair out because I tried everything. I even thought it was my VS-700 (blasphemous!),  I dug deeper and kept getting spikes with tcpip.sys, netio, and ntoskrnl. It was bad, like real bad. Then I FIXED IT.

Go to Power Management -> High Performance Plan -> advanced -> and make sure your CPU State Minimum is at 100%. Sounds easy (it is) but it is a rare gem that can only be found with hours of scouring the net. IT made my entire PC blazingly fast - I went from Balanced to High Performance - and it seems I'm on entire new pc.

Other optimizing techniques can be found through http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2195242&mpage=1. Take them with a grain of salt though.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the tip PJ. On my Win 7 Install I started with 'Power Options' >'High Performance Plan'>'Change Plan Settings'>'Change Advanced Power Settings' >'Processor Power Management'> 'Minimum Processor State' - set to 100%. Mine was already set at 100% there and thanks again for the tip.

High performance is always 100% CPU. Mine was set to Balanced which was 50% I believe.

    Enjoy folks.
