I'm a very happy owner of Orchestral Essentials, if anyone is on the fence feel free to ask your questions.
I picked it up because I was very curious about the whole concept of ensemble based sample libraries. On the one hand, it seems obvious that they are going to sound better because, well, because they are recorded in-situ. On the other hand, you give up a LOT in terms of control and flexibility. No third hand this time...
I wasn't willing to make the investment in one of the bigger programs, so OE seemed like an obvious way to get my toes in the water. (Actually, my first ensemble based library was CineOrch, which I still use, and still love.)
It does represent a different way of thinking, and there are things you can not do, which should be obvious I guess, but I had to try it<G>! And admittedly, I'm still not completely at home with it, but I've spent some time and I've been able to learn to use it to the point where I'm no longer wondering what I was thinking.
Mostly I use it in addition to other libraries, but over the last month or so I've spent a lot of time trying to use it by itself, just to learn.
In spite of all of that, I'm very satisfied with OE, and I expect to pick up some of the bigger Project Sam or Spirfire ensemble based libraries as projects demand (and budget allows<G>!)
