Orchestral Movie Theme - "Visions of Paris" (Garritan Competition entry)

http://tinyurl.com/7ljzu6t

I'm thinking about entering this piece into the Garritan Composer Contest.  There is a mandatory motif that must be used somewhere within the composition (the first seven notes in my case) and you have to use Garritan sounds.

I went with a Michel Legrand/Henry Mancini-esque theme and I'm trying to invoke a French vibe.

Any and all comments are welcome...except that the orchestral sounds suck because I'm stuck with them.

This is a lovely piece.  I can think of any number of movies that this would be appropriate for.  The mix is full and balanced, and the arrangement is first class.  Well done and good luck.

That's pretty cool :-) you nailed the movie soundtrack vibe, good job.

Well, unless it's one of "those..." movies? But I don't think it is, so my original comment stands!

    Jonas,

Nice piece and nicely orchestrated.   I would love to hear this with something like VSL or LA Scoring Strings.  Good luck in the contest.

    Hi Jonas,

It's been a long time since the days I used to spend hours here in the forum.
I have been really busy and only come here when I need help...will do my best to keep in touch more often.

I really like the sound of your piece.
Was it done with GPO sounds only? Do they have a new version or is still the old one?
I have never used it again after I bought EWQLSO play.

Would like to hear more about the creative process on this piece.

    Best,

    Joni

    Hi Jonas,

This is really well done. In spite of your disclaimer about GPO I think the orchestration more than makes up for any shortcomings on the part of the orchestral sounds. Good luck in the contest.

    Thanks for the props everyone.

The production is 100% GPO, with some UAD plugins and three instances ValhallaRoom reverb.  Garritan released their own sample playback engine some years ago (Aria), but the library is the same as the original version they released for Kontakt.

As far as the creative process, I can be extremely specific.  Here is the sketch that I started with: http://tinyurl.com/6pz2nny   This looks like piano music, but it's really not.  The bass clef structures were orchestrated pretty much verbatim.  The three-note structures were assigned to a bass (root) and cellos divisi (7th and 10th or something similar).  Later on in the orchestration I assigned these structures to the woodwind section as contrabassoon and two bassoons.

The only thing that is departure from my usual orchestrations is that I sometimes took the top note of the low string "pad" and assigned it to a woodwind instrument(s).  You'll see the mixing of the sections starting in bar 3 of the score.  The note that would have normally been played by the violas was assigned to alto flute and doubled by a clarinet.

Note that the contrabass sounds an octave lower than written, but otherwise this is a concert score:

    Hi again Jonas,

Really cool. I just love to follow orchestral arrangements.
Will come back with more questions.
Have you ever tried it with ewqlso? Would like to know what articulation you would use for each part.

    Take care

    Link corrected.

I only have some of the EWQLSO that is part of Quantum Leap Colossus.  The arrangement would sound fine with almost any sample library.  The important thing is that the orchestration has good lines throughout and there are no problematic vertical intervals.

I just purchased VSL Special Edition, primarily for its woodwinds.  It should be here tomorrow and I can't wait to get to work with it.  It will be a great addition to Cinebrass and LA Scoring Strings 2.0.

Good to see you around here Joni!

    Hi, Jonas,

This is really a well done orchestral piece!

Very pleasant, and it has a fresh sounding cinematic appeal to it.  I can definitely imagine this as part of a soundtrack to a big screen production.

    Very nice work!

Very nice Jonas! I've been playing around with GPO and 'soundtrack' compositions but no where near this extent. Your piece evokes visions of Paris, so I feel you achieved what the contest is looking for. Good luck!!!

Really nice, Jonas! Well done, and good luck!

You may (or may not) be pleased to know that I recently bought 'The Guide to Midi Orchestration', devoured it, took copious notes and loved every page of it.  Can't wait to start a new one...or rework a few old ones.  Probably shoulda bought it a couple years ago, but oh well.

Anyway, great job.  I hope you're enjoying VSL Special Edition too! :)

I did a complete remix of this piece.  The song had to be shortened to 90 seconds long, so I had to delete a couple of bars (a better option than speeding it up), and it gave me the opportunity to re-balance some phrases a little better.
The same link applies and comments/suggestions are welcome.

@Blown306: I'm going to title the piece "Visions of Paris".

@Janet: The Guide To MIDI Orchestration is a fine book.  I heard that Thomas J. Bergersen, probably the best MIDI mockup guy on the planet, was working on a book that explains how he gets his mock-ups to sound so perfect.

My favorite orchestration books are the two volumes that cover orchestration in the Equal Interval System course, "Creative Orchestration" by George Frederick McKay, "Complete Handbook For The Music Arranger" by Mikey Baker and "Arranging Music for the Real World" by Vince Corozine.

Hey Jonas great job.  The arranging and orchestration sounded great.  The writing had a very distinctive flavor that was entertaining and soothing.  The arrangment was able to make good use of the library without highighting the weak points which should be a good strategy for winning.  I wish you luck my friend.

On another note, are you talking about Thomas from EW?  He makes some incredible use of the library, I would definately buy his tips and tricks book.  The EW forums can be a great resource and are filled with some extremely talented people, unfortunately there are more than several people who think it's a crime to share any decent midi mock up techniques.  That attitude gets tiring.
