Orchestral instrument transposition.

I am in the transition of creating a Sonar template with instrument specific tuning and possibly note range

Does anybody know if any real working guides exist for all the common instruments from the brass, strings, woodwind groups?

Essentially I am aiming to create 4 midi folders with the MIDI Transpose increment/decrements already in place. So a Contrabass will automatically be 9 intervals raised to match the pitch of a Cello for example.

It will take a bit of research and putting together.

I googled "orchestral instrument ranges" and got http://www.orchestralibra..com/reftables/rang.html

That's a great start and one I think I seen before. At least this will get the ball rolling.

If I want to get serious about this I might invest in some literature.

Are you specifically focused on the ranges of instruments? Not sure if there is more to the question, but the best guide on instruments I have seen is http://www.independentrec...chart/main_display.htm (it is an interactive chart with some interesting stuff).

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Orchestral mock ups at the moment. It's to save time and have working template at the same time.

I forgot a lot of these links. Cheers.

Here's what I propose to do then.

Use the MIDI FX Transpose.

  • Transpose it by any intervals required.
  • Group each instrument into each required family.
The reason being you can audition things then bounce the MIDI clips later for the final render. It will save a lot of time and guess work as I'm no brass, stringed instrument or woodwind player.

For the moment I will be using East West/Quantum Leap Symphonic Choirs/Orchestra, Hollywood Brass, Hollywood Strings Gold, QL Solo Violin, QL Spaces and any other libraries I can make use of.

The time and effort will save me lots of time in the future.....hopefully anyway.

If I understand you right, your intention is to translate existing orchestral scores into DAW/VSTi realm. Correct? I prefer to type score into Notation program, then export MIDI and import it into Sonar.
If you are going to compose original music and enter notes via MIDI keyboard, you won't need transposition templates at all.

So I looked at different notation programs which on the outside seem ok. Some very expensive ones I can't justify although renting Avid Sibelius is another option for some. Finale is a professional package which supports the Rewire Protocol and comes with instruments to hear your masterpieces with.

I suppose if I could get something along the lines of Cubase score where you never have to leave Sonar it would be great.
